______________

Kovu and Kiara didn’t hesitate, not waiting for Zazu to come meet them. They ran forward, past him and his flight to alert others to the danger. To no doubt tell the remaining royals, pride members and residents in way of the flames. He knew where queen Nala was and past the pair he zipped. For they needed to find the root of the smoke and if something could be done with it. As guard it was Kovu expectation to protect his pride and lands. As a royal, Kiara needed to see what was amiss and what could be done to make it right.

The heat of bright day gave way to heat of dark smolder. Even within a several feet of the flames they could see how dangerous it was consuming. The flames were licking up the dry, golden grass in short order and very little was in its way of it. Kiara felt her heart start as she looked at its quick approach, to Priderock far too close and to the land with not a spec of water in sight.

“And the rains aren’t due for over a month yet at least.” She thought, heart triple timing. “Spirit help us, what are we to do?”

She followed after Kovu, taking lead from and comfort in him. And her heart rose as his attention fell upon a figure near the flames to the north.

“Simba!” the young guard cried the kings name, who stood looking concerned but resolute on a little hill overlooking the flame. They ran to and were with him, greeting quick and Kiara settling comfortably between both, more assured in both males’ presence. The two males explained each side of before witnessing the flames, Kiara half listening as she watched the fire approach. She heard the flame started some time a few hours prior. Zazu had of course spotted and kept track of such but said the smoke made it hard to see too far in. But had said it seemed to start not too far from the Outlander border heading East. It been fast and no doubt several herds been taken but far more escaped. It already taken the nearly a third of the land to the West and North, mostly along the borders. And at this rate could take far more than half if not stopped soon. Captain Ifetoya had been informed and was working to collect pride and head to Priderock. While Zazu had informed the birds to fly ahead and inform any and all to the danger. While Zazu himself was to fetch Queen Nala. Now Simba stood watching it with messengers sent and waiting to resolve it.

“We should call Rafiki.” Kovu exclaimed. “Can’t he summon some aid to put it out. Call for rain or wind to kill it.”

Simba seemed near to smile at this remark. “You know it doesn’t work that way.”

At Kovu’s annoyance and need to resolve this disaster, it only seemed to make the King smile widen, in pride and amusement, before his light in joy as he looked past the young pair.

“Besides I’ve already sent for other animals’ aid. Ones who CAN help in settling the fire without mystical need.”

The pair looked where he was, coming into shock, gasp escaping in wonder at what they witnessed. Some ways away, Zazu sat atop Queen Nala’s back as she made easy trots at the head. And behind, making well placed marches, was a several elephants. Mixes of multiple visiting herds from massive bulls, modest cows, and excitable teens. Many as was needed to be spared from their herds for the task Simba had told Zazu and Queen Nala to require of them. For as they walked side long to the flames, one long line, they sucked and scooped great bits of dirt up into trunks. And once having enough flung before and sprayed the flames. One or two may not be enough but continuous results from so many of them smothered the flames more and more. Soon Nala joined the three on the ridge of the hill as the elephants continued walking parallel to the flames, striding ever north. Simba smirked to Nala and Zazu, who smiled back, with the younger pair still in awe at the adults planning and execution. But in time they watched as bit by bit the lands were taken back as the fires died. Finally, the last was snuffed out, smoke and ash only hint at the danger once present. With most flame gone, the elephants moved forward to kick off and stamp flames, embers, and sparks to prevent reignition of flames. Zazu took off, sent to retrieve pride to help and assure residents. Simba and the other three moved from the hill down to see the damage, near the still glowing red of embers, and speak to the working elephants. Even assist them.

They spoke and saw all resolved, crisis averted and assurance that come spring rain this would be recovering. And all threats of reignition so close to grasses was gone too with farther fields cooling even now. With all well, the cries went out of elephant and lion in victory of beating off the threat. Of assurance in skill and unity towards cause. Echoed out and on the wind, they heard other beasts respond in equal adulation. Cheers ringing out for many minutes yet.

And then as the all the victorious sounds from the assembled beasts and beyond eased some harsh, chilling sound took its place. A small but growing even if it didn’t come close to the cacophony from before. But still it forced silence and turned cheerful mood towards cold alarm. A laugh, not natural or true. It was amused. And it was mocking. As all scanned about for the source, their horror intensified as they realized it came from the smoke and smolder that was dying out. Drawing all heads towards those burnt lands. And from those ashen shadows did slowly something darker take form first as one then three. They squinted more and all wondered frightened what could this be. It was Kovu though, who recognized the forms more than the faces even with distortion and times separating him from them. And he most of all felt horror and disgust strike him, unable to speak before other realized who to was. And were also stunned and horrified though not as much as Kovu.

For before them stood Zira and her two children. Scarred and smiling with pure madness in her and their eyes. Standing amongst the dying flames they no doubt started.

And after a small break from Turn Tail and next we see the royals and their reaction to the fire. Along with a unsettling end after victory seems achieved.

Image took a little longer then expected. mostly with sizing on this page and even then not fully satisfied. But I needed to get it done so I finished it and left it done as is.
