Welcome back to another edition of devInterviews!

This particular devInterview was done by GwenavhyeurAnastasia.

For devInterviews first member of the literature community, I would like to present Amertie .

Amertie has been a member on deviantART for almost thirteen months now. She is one of the most popular writers on dA; her work is featured on the front page on a constant basis.

Q: To start, I’d like if you could give some general background information on yourself, including why you joined dA.
A: i'm 15, and my birthday is december 17. i live in texas. i like catfish and the color cerulean. i have a fascination with stars and yes, i sing in the shower. and i’m also a llama fish, whatever that is. i joined because i wanted people to read and comment on my writing. i wanted critique and suggestions. oh, and my name’s alyssa.

Q: So, as one of the most popular writers on dA, have you found the critique you’re looking for? What’re the benefits of being popular on dA?
A: no, i haven't. most comments are usually praising me or my work, and even the in depth critiques are way more praise than constructive criticism. i never really feel unimportant on dA though. and people actually care about my opinion when i go to comment on their work. popularity makes you more... confident that your voice gets heard, i guess.

before things broke. She was beautiful, once.

But that was before.

Before, she would play in the river with her daughter. At winter, it would snow, but nothing would freeze over. She wondered how, and her daughter would laugh and say, it’s because I asked for this.

Daddy left them a long time ago. He left for work and she said, I’ll see you later, honey. He just said, yeah. Yeah, sure.

He didn’t come back.

That was December. It’s May, now, and she still misses him but her daughter doesn’t. April says he was mean to her, she didn’t really know him, he never really cared. Why should she care if he’s gone? He was no good to yo 'Before things broke'.

Q: What do you believe is your writing style? Do you favor some topics more than others? What inspires you to write?
A: i tend to write prosetry. and. i favor the topic of love a lot more than i should, like writers tend to do. i also like to include stars and breathing and sometimes clouds in my writing, and a lot of my writing deals with either hopelessness or hope. my writing is nearly all stream of consciousness. it flows the way it does in my head.
i'm inspired by random things. the main ones are phrases, people, a line in a song, and my own thoughts. i write because it's a release. it clears my head of thoughts and makes the feelings less suffocating.

Q: Where do you want to take your writing in the future? How would you like to improve it?
A: i'd like to get published in a book of my own. i don't think poetry books and magazines count. i'd like to make it more. mature, i guess, and more cohesive. and i'd like to be better at imagery. and. i don’t know, i just want to improve it. sometimes, i feel like writing but my words come out like: alsdkfjaslkdfjaslkdfjsdf OH LOOK A FLOWER. frustrating to try to improve that.

heart song.this is the song
to your heart.

listen.

-

part zero.
oh, dearest,
why are you locked inside
a bathroom stall? no one
to hold you, tell you sweet
lies and say you are
beautiful, say you are
perfect? it's not the end of
the world, not yet. if it was,
wouldn't there be
fireworks?

-

part one.

sleeping.

your heart is not yet
dead; please do not
say it is. if it was dead,
it wouldn't hurt this
much.

your heart is only sleeping.

-

part two.

when the only melody in your head
is a break up song, and the only thing
your heart seems capable of doing
is twisting itself into knots, and the only
thing you want to do is hide a 'heart song'.

Q: Do you want to get formal training in writing in the future?
A: yes and no. mostly yes. i want actual help with  my writing. someone who's been there, i guess. i want their opinion. i want someone to tell me what i should and shouldn't do, i guess. like what works and what doesn't. just worried they’ll try to make me fit in a box. teachers have a habit of saying no, don’t do that, etc. they can tell you to not do something that actually defines you, like with me having no capitals. or correct grammar. i’d hate my writing if i changed all that. still trying to figure out what i like about my style.

Q: Alright, classic question – what made you start writing?
A: i was bored, the end. in sixth grade i had a free period and i’d already finished all my homework in class. by then, i’d already read most of the books in the school library, all the good ones anyway. they wouldn’t let me go to the high school library.

Q: So you enjoy reading. What is your favorite book, and why?
A: um. the perks of being a wallflower. because the author captured. depression? and confusion? whatever it was. perfectly, i think. and their style is. incredible. and. it had this huge. impact. it made me. think. it still does. even though i haven't touched it in months. thinking about it. still makes me want to laugh and cry and smile and hug someone. and then cry again. the subject. and how the author portrayed it. make you feel. everything. i’d recommend it to others, definitely.

soft.you said
the sky is a canvas,

and i have written
your heart
with its candles

(i love you)

and this truth
is soft, a whispered
confession, painted
in petals;

this promise
is fragile, a run
away cloud, a porcelain
child -

so please,
tread softly. 'soft'.

Q: What else do you like to do in your free time, other than reading and writing?
A: i play softball, listen to music, watch television, play video games like halo, rock band, and super smash brothers. i like shopping for journals. listening to all music but rap. my favorite bands include nickelback, staind, the fray, onerepublic, frou frou, blue october, matchbox twenty.

Q: You mentioned that you like shopping for journals. As a writer, having a journal is obviously important. Which one is your favorite?
A: um. this one journal i found online. it's like. blueish and beige, kind of. with a bird cage and little doodled birds on it. it's cute. my favorite one that i’ve ever bought, though, is the one i bought for a friend. it’s blue. and has a star of the front. and the pages are unlined. and she tells me it smells like art. which is inspiring.

Q: Lovely. Could you tell us some about your family life, pets, and friends?
A: i have a blue beta fish named fillet (no joke). my parents are divorced; i live with my dad and step mom. i have a younger brother, he's 13. my friends are about as weird as i am. but they're also the best people in the world, and i mean that. they make me smile. <3 my best friends are two weirdos named kayley and kaitlyn.

Q: What about your involvement in dA and the literature community?
A: i’m very active. watch around a hundred people. i enjoy leaving comments on their work. especially the writers.

and i'll be the painter.your skin is feather
white, and i imagine

littering your face
with half-moon marks;
i imagine

the noises you'd make,
like a chalkboard,
darling,

and i'm going to be the nails.

your screams
will be thunder,
a train screeching to a

stop.

i imagine
your eyes
are full of our dreams,

and i'll bring the nightmares
to the surface;

your skin is feather-white,
darling. you are a canvas waiting

to be drenched
in blood. 'and i'll be the painter'.

Q: Do you leave critique? Do you believe people without subscriptions be allowed to give critique?
A: oh. no. because i never know if anyone actually wants a critique. i would if they asked or let me know they wanted one, i mean. and yes. definitely. the majority of dA’s members aren’t subscribed, so the subscribers should be allowed to receive critique from them, too. i can understand why only subscribers get to use the critique feature to get them, though.

Now, I opened the floor for some of Alyssa’s watchers to ask questions, and here are a few that we picked to get to know her better on a more personal level.

Q: If you could pick one place in the world, one place to stand and look at before you died so you could say 'if I haven’t done anything else worthwhile, at least I got to see this' where would it be? from maimtorturekill

A: the arctic. more specifically, the arctic during summer. i know it's odd, but midnight sun (the phenomenon, not the book) has always fascinated me. oddly enough, i find it poetic, and i think it'd give me hope.

Q: What are you most afraid of? from Cinnamonsecrets
A: losing people. i hate the idea of people moving on without me, and i'm constantly worried about it. or, well. i'd say, 'i'm afraid of needles' because that's probably less depressing and more interesting. long story. but that's not the truth.

Q: What is your favorite exotic cheese? from Essenceofnight
A: i really don't think i've ever tried an exotic cheese. you should go ask my friend kay if she likes blue cheese. she likes anything that's moldy. kidding.

Q: What dA cliché do you hate the most? Or writing cliché. from Who-Is-LSDave
A: not sure this counts, but i hate writing that's overkill sappy. it feels so. illusioned. and i want to scream.

Q: If you were a star, what type would you be? A white dwarf, a red giant? Maybe a supernova even? from Lightly-Floating
A: absolutely love this question. thank you for asking it.
um, i think i'd be a supernova, because they glow incredibly brightly, and i'd like to glow for once. but really, they're just the death of a star, and i think that's poetic.

Q: If you were to say one thing to those who read your work, what would it be? from Makola94
A: it's insanely cliché, but i'd have to say thank you. thank you for making me feel like i can do something right, thank you for supporting me, thank you for. everything. because it really does make me smile.

because i love you.listen, just for a few minutes.

take a few deep breaths [even if you don't want to breathe anymore]. listen to the pitter-patter of your heart beating in your ears and feel your pulse racing. taste the silence of the world; see the anxiety take over you.

close your eyes and look at the black. look at the black until you see something worth holding onto inside of yourself. wait until breathing doesn't feel like a losing game and then open your eyes,

and listen.

.

look, you

are wonderful. you remind me of a lullaby in winter, sung like a secret not meant for anyone to know; but it's a shame, because you're one of the most beautiful songs.

Q: What's your favorite candle scent? from Merriara
A: it's plain, but vanilla. it smells warm to me. comforting.

Q: A final word of wisdom for new writers?
A: for new writers. practice. and don’t give up on yourself. but for writers in general. i’d like to say. experiment.

That concludes this week's interview with the lovely Amertie .

If you want to see the midnight sun, just come to Norway.
Northern-Norway, that is.

Beautiful nature, snowy mountaintops and sun 24/7 in summer.

And close to where I live there's this island like a mountain, and the sun follows it's slope. Towards the end of summer you can watch it go down along the silhouette of the mountain untill it finally sinks behind the sea.
Beautiful.
