The Interview

For devInterviews first photographer interview I present Gonzale a long serving deviant and a very new addition to the DA staff members!
For 4 years now Gonzale has photographed most of the world! Her shots are varied but mainly follow a very urban and real feel.
I discovered Gonzale about 3 weeks ago and I was drawn in by her sitback slideshow which at the time was showing stunning images of riots (peaceful and violent), I quickly added her to devwatch while I looked through the rest of her fantastic gallery.
She now lives in Paris and has already captured most of the romantic city in photographic form!

Q. What kind a photography do you love and why?

A.I love a photograph where I can sense the curiosity of the photographer. The awareness he has of his surroundings, the degree at which he can control what happens in front of his eyes, and the way he transforms it into an image. I like spontaneous photography because it is always a new image and it relies on luck and talent... specifically the talents based on reflexes and quick-thinking. Street photography is a good school for that. Besides the obvious definitions of this kind of photography (the decisive moment, etc), it also makes us think about how we position ourselves from the other (the one we take a photo of), how we distance ourselves from our subject, and why we choose to put this barrier (the camera) between us and the world. The photographers I love always carry a camera with them.

Q. How did you get into photography?

A.I don't really remember a precise moment when i thought "hey, let's get into photography". I know i've been taking photos for a long time... I started "making images" by drawing and painting when i was 11-12... people were telling me i was good... but the process was too long for me, i was always finishing my paintings as fast as possible.. and they never turned out like i wanted them to be. I began using more and more photography for some visual projects, until i went fully into photography... i'd say in 2005. I learned the technical aspects of it in the streets, and on dA, by talking to dAmembers/photographers who were more experienced than me. And i'm still learning today.

Q.Have you ever tried any other mediums of art?

A. As i said, i also draw, paint, i sculpt sometimes. I also film (video), i've done a videoclip and a very short fiction. Some little documentaries too. I also compose electronic music when i have the time to. but i haven't finished anything yet, music-wise. I love to dance. i sing in my shower. I enjoy playing in theater plays. My dad's a theater and dance teacher who also composes his shows musics and draws andddd... yeah. I guess he influenced me somehow.

Q. What do you think of photos which are edited after they are taken?

A.It depends on the amount of editing... digital photography needs a bit of editing, otherwise it looks grey and dull. I rarely crop my photos, and i just alter the curves a bit... Most of the time, editing-trends make the photo look kitsch a few years later... so everyone should be careful with that... and as for heavy editing, altering the content of an image... to each his own. It depends on the photographer's sense of ethics.

Q. Congratulations on becoming a part of the DeviantArt staff! Now that you can choose DD's what do you look for in one?

A.Thank you, i'm very glad to be a part of it. spyed is a great guy for letting crazy girls like me have so much power... yeah. ahem so.. well, what i look for in a photograph to be a DD is mentionned in the first question.

Q. Is there a country (which you haven't already visited)that you would love to photograph?

A.Plenty. it'll be shorter if i tell you the countries i've visited, as i'd want to visit all the others : france, germany, austria, albania, turkey, lebanon, syria, egypt, china, cambodia, thailand, usa, canada.

Q. Obviously you have a great presence in the DeviantArt community, has this presence been present from the days/weeks that you joined up?

A.Yes i've been very active here from the start. As i said i learned a lot from the people here, i met a bunch of dA members, and it's been a good experience all these years.

Q. Do you photograph for a living or as a hobby?

A.I'm still a student (in photography and video, in an art school) but i also work for an agency called Prospekt, an italian agency for photojournalism. There are great photographers in this agency so i'm very glad to be a part of it. I'd say i'm going towards "living" of photography. Gettin ready to starrrve !

Q. A final word/sentence of wisdom for new photographers?

A.Shoot. Learn. Be curious and open to criticism. yep !
