Chapter 4

__y/n__ stared into the fire. She thought about everything that had happened that day. The new girl showing up in the box, telling her they had been best friends. Even though __y/n__ couldn’t remember having any friends, she somehow thought that the girl was telling the truth. She certainly seemed trustworthy, not to mention nice and friendly. __y/n__ could imagine being friends with her. It’s just that she wasn’t used to life in the Glade yet. She wasn’t used to Gally. He had been on her mind all day, she couldn’t help it. She hadn’t seen him after he’d yanked her out the Slammer. It was like he’d been avoiding her. Nonsense, __y/n__ thought. The guy hates me. She looked up and saw that he was sitting across from her, on the other side of the fire. And he was looking at her. But when __y/n__ caught his eye, he quickly averted his gaze.
“Hi.”
__y/n__ pulled herself from her thoughts, and saw that Newt was standing next to her.
“Hey Newt,” she answered.
“Mind if I sit with you?”
__y/n__ shook her head, and Newt immediately sat down, giving __y/n__ a heart-warming smile.
“You want a drink?” he asked, offering his glass.
__y/n__ thankfully took it, and began to drink. After the first sip she gasped for air. “What is this stuff?”
Newt began to laugh. “It’s Gally’s secret recipe. I thought you could use some loosening up.”
“Loosening up? Am I that boring?” __y/n__ joked.
“No,” he replied seriously, running a hand through his hair. “But the last couple of days have been hard for you.”
__y/n__ thought for a while. Maybe Newt was right. Maybe she could loosen up and have some fun tonight for a change. She took a deep breath and finished the rest of Newt’s glass, feeling the liquor burn in her throat. She then smiled at Newt. “So, do you have another one?”

“No way!” __y/n__ slurred, while she threw her head back laughing. She’d had way too many drinks, and everything Newt said seemed to be funny.
“And then he klunked his pants. Twice.” Newt chuckled, while he stared at her laughing.
When __y/n__ finally stopped, which was difficult because every time she looked at Newt she started laughing again, she noticed not only Newt staring at her, but Gally as well. He stood in the middle of his so-called ‘ring’, where he liked to show off his strength by pushing people out of it. He just won another round, and was now sipping from his drink. __y/n__ was startled to find him actually smiling at her. It was not a self-satisfied smile, as she would’ve expected from him, but it was an actual, genuine smile. A smile of liking.
__y/n__ was mesmerized. His smile made his whole face light up, making him look even more gorgeous than usual.
A shy expression spread across her face, as she kept looking at him. He kept looking back this time, not averting his gaze. __y/n__ could feel her cheeks turn red as he held her gaze, followed by a pleasant chill down her spine.
“__y/n__.” Newt nudged her.
“Hm?” __y/n__ said absent-mindedly, without taking her eyes off Gally.
“About what I said earlier… about you being able to have any guy you want?” he said hesitantly, not sure whether __y/n__ was listening or not.
“Yeah, what about it?” she answered, still refusing to take her eyes off Gally.
“I suggest not going after him.”
This caught __y/n__’s attention. “What? Not going after who?”
Newt raised an eyebrow. “I saw you looking at Gally.”
“So? Can’t I look at a guy?” she asked dismissively.
“Let me rephrase that. I saw the way you looked at Gally. You like him.”
“W-what?” __y/n__ looked alarmed. “I-I don’t…”
“It’s okay.” Newt smiled reassuringly. “It’s just that I don’t want you to get hurt,” he continued, his expression suddenly showing concern.
This surprised __y/n__. “Th-thanks,” she mumbled. Her eyes found Gally once more, and she saw that he had already found a new victim, whom he was pushing out of the circle. The poor boy lost his balance, stumbling over Newt’s feet.
“Argh,” he groaned.
“You okay?” __y/n__ asked, while she kneeled down to examine him. She had to keep herself from falling over, the alcohol was starting to kick in.
The boy nodded, but __y/n__ could tell he was in pain.
“Watch it, Gally,” Newt said sternly, his voice booming with authority.
Gally shrugged indifferently, and looked around. “Who wants to be my next victim?”
“What?” __y/n__ yelled furiously, while she stumbled over to him. “You just don’t know when to stop, do you?” She now stood in front of him, arms folded.
Gally smirked at her. “What do you say Greenie? Wanna see what you’re made of?”
__y/n__ was speechless. He hadn’t listened to a word she’d just said.
“The rules are simple, Greenie,” he continued. “I try to push you out of the circle, and-”
“You try to last more than five seconds, right?” __y/n__ interrupted, feeling the urge to fight him.
__y/n__ heard a few boys cheer, but they quickly shut up when Gally glared at them.
“I hope you’re stronger than you look,” he sneered, eyeing her.
“__y/n__, what are you doing?”
__y/n__ looked up and saw Annabel standing a couple of feet away, clearly worried. “Fighting,” she slurred dryly.
“But you’ll never win,” Annabel said concerned. “You’ll only get hurt. You know how strong he is.”
“Yeah, you know how strong I am,” Gally snorted.
“I’m going to beat his sorry ass for what he did to me,” __y/n__ retorted. And with that, she lunged forward at Gally.
However, he saw this coming, and dodged her, sending __y/n__ flying into the sand. It was hard to stand up again, as she was dizzy from the alcohol, but she finally managed to do it. She turned around to face Gally again, but immediately felt his fist against her jaw. __y/n__ let out a scream, and gasped for air. She felt something trickle down her chin, and instinctively knew it was blood. She heard Newt yell something about harming another Glader and the Slammer, but all she could think about was Gally, and how she wanted revenge for everything he’d done.
She got up again, but decided to wait for Gally to make a move, which he did after a couple of seconds. He made a lunge at her, but this time it was __y/n__’s turn to dodge him. She ducked under his outstretched arms, and immediately turned around to send him flying out of the circle.
The whole Glade erupted in cheering and hollering, but __y/n__ wasn’t finished yet. She stormed towards Gally again, and threw herself on him, pinning him to the ground. She slammed her fist into his jaw, but when she raised her hand once more, she was suddenly lifted off of him.
“What the-” she started, but then saw that it was Annabel, looking extremely worried. Meanwhile, Newt and Minho had grabbed Gally, and restrained him from going anywhere.
“It’s clear that you two can’t stay away from each other,” Newt said. “So you can spend the night in the Slammer. Together.”
