Description
The Troopers are going jogging and rock climbing, and Percy invites himself along.
The Troopers see a bunch of Grimlord's monsters training on the other side of a hill. They don't want to risk fighting them all at once.
In virtual reality, Decimator reveals that the monsters are competing for the chance to battle the Troopers in Grimlord's next scheme. Darkheart looks to be the winner.
The Troopers are about to head to the lab, but are attacked by Skugs!
They fight them off and go to find Jeb and Percy. They're fine, but Percy insists on staying. They're reluctant, but they leave Percy behind, assuming Skugs wouldn't bother him. Percy is up in a tree, but begins to regret his location when he sees a snake on a nearby branch. The others already left, though.
At the lab, they analyze a scan JB took of the monsters training. One of the mutants has a DNA reading, meaning they're human! Who could it be, though?
In virtual reality, Darkheart accepts a final challenge and succeeds. Grimlord orders him to destroy Ryan Steele.
The Troopers go through missing person reports, thinking one may be a clue to who the human was they got a reading from. Ryan wonders if it could be his father.
That night, Ryan sees Darkheart in a nightmare. He won't fight, for fear it's his father.
The next day, Ryan can't focus on karate training. He tells the others about his dream.
Professor Hart alerts the Troopers that he's located a mutant, the same one with the DNA signature!
Ryan goes alone to face them, not wanting them to think they were being challenged in case it was his father.
Darkheart fires at Ryan, but Ryan doesn't fight back. Percy is nearby, just getting out of the tree. He snaps some photos of the encounter, when suddenly he's kidnapped by Skugs! JB and Kaitlin go to rescue him.
Ryan gets Darkheart's weapon away, and demands to know who he is. Darkheart only acknowledges that he's a mutant, and insists Ryan kill him. Ryan refuses and walks away.
JB and Kaitlin look for Percy, and narrowly miss him. For the first time, we see what a break in the reality barrier looks like. A swirling, crackling yellow vortex. The Skugs throw Percy in and teleport away. JB and Kaitlin find the vortex and go through themselves, finding Percy on the other side. They're trapped in room with spiked walls, and they're closing in!
Darkheart returns to Grimlord, and is sentenced to execution.
Hart tells Ryan that he's lost contact with the other Troopers. Ryan uses the VR Visor to scan virtual reality, and sees Darkheart being led to his execution. Ryan wants to stop it, but he has to find JB and Kaitlin first.

This is an intense start to the first multi parter since VR Troopers' premiere.
Everything works and flows well, nothing feels padded for time.
Percy is handled fairly well, though I wonder why he invites himself to exercise. Physical exertion is definitely not a hobby of his.
Darkheart is an intriguing character. On his previous appearance, he was just another minion. Now we're learning a teensy bit more about him.
One odd bit, Ryan's nightmare. How does he know it's Darkheart is the next mutant to fight? They don't know yet that he's the one with the DNA signature.
The Skugs interacting with character other than the Troopers is rare, almost as rare as Percy being important to the plot.
It's cool to finally see a break in the reality barrier, so often mentioned, but never seen.
The tension ramps up perfectly, and the first part ends on high stakes.
