Funny that bio should mention brainpower, since the V-rexes onscreen were flat-out plot-lobotomized. They seemed to spend about two-thirds of that fight trying to snap up Ann instead of focusing on Kong....even while tangled up in vines about eight stories off the forest floor. You'd think any elephant-plus-scale beastie would stop & take stock in a situation like that, if only to freak out due to their pending drop towards a splattery stop.
That said, restoring a bit of athleticism (and lips) to the design has intriguing results. Those dorsal scutes in particular are quite snazzy, and the beefed-up lower jaw actually fits damned well. That purple has me on the fence, but then again, this guy can swap hues in an eyeblink...

Drake's Dorsal plating is a controlled effect like a Octopus bulging to scare off predators. In serene state it would be very smooth looking. Drake is just putting on a show in that picture. On the game front I thought it would be interesting to have the model morphing it's back in battle or say standing still trying to blend itself. Sort of a visual indicator for danger that the player could easily recognize if closing on a enemy either Ai or a other player.
Where I wanted Drake to be a formidable theropod I also wanted him to be relatable to the player. The V-rexes are antagonists while Drake can easily be seen as a protagonist... or a hero of sorts. Also I wanted him to appeal to Girl Gamers. If they wanted to play as him I wanted them to like what they were playing as. Plus he's really the Red Devil in disguise. I love me the old days of Marvel Comics.

Ahh, so that scaly bric-a-brac works like feline/canine hackles? Nifty. And gimme a demerit for not making the connection with Jack Kirby's other D.D. Infusing this brute with a bit of regal, audience-appeal charm also works for me.
