Description
As you can see here I did my own version of the Rescue V Toads to make them stand out more with different character models and some slight alterations in designs.
Okay, so, I just want to get this out of the way and make a statement for myself. This is going to be a bit lengthy so I’ll try shortening it.
After seeing the accidental leaked videos of “Paper Mario: Color Splash” and its many analysis and a few spoilers, my assumption and research about the game since it was first announce many months ago were pretty much on point and went as I had anticipated. Call it what you will and say whatever otherwise; the game is essentially Sticker Star 2.0. Yes, it has better writing, and yes the dialogues and scenarios are humorous as it should be expected.
However, I’m not going to rant about the game as a whole. No, instead I’ll focus on a topic that I came to appreciated the most within Mario games; the ‘Characters’. So far, I’m very much disappointed. Why? Just read a little bit more as I share apart of myself.
Imagine; for nearly 2 decades and have played almost every adventurous Mario game Nintendo created since the NES in the late 90s. Now, many years later, what had we learned are the main concept for Mario platforms? Gameplay and Music; that has yet to disappoint me. Now what’s considered the rarity in Mario platforming games? Characters, Backstories, general Story or original Plot to keep the games interesting. There have been a few Mario platformers that do have a bit of those concepts, but none of them stand out more than “Super Mario Sunshine” and “Super Mario Galaxy 1”. My main interest and concerns has always been about the characters. I always value the appeal of a character designs and what new creative enemies/bosses you’ll come face to face as the game progressive. That’s where both the “Paper Mario” and “Mario & Luigi” series come into play; diving deeper into the Mario franchise and bypasses the generic concepts to give us more and do more than what Mario platformers are aloud to offer.
Unfortunately, there isn’t’ much ‘Character’ or anything too outstanding about them in this game. The developers took this upon themselves to make it a “challenge” to see how witty and creative they can get with just interaction and dialogues alone. Toads and Shy Guys as far as I can tell are the dominate norm of the NPCs in “Color Splash”.
Clear to the point, no amount of personality placed into these generic looking casts of species will never be enough to appeal my interest. Regardless how you put it, it’s still a regular generic Toad that shares the same model design. Heck, they don’t have any identities, such as NAMES! Just like my picture above, if the devs choices for this game are going to consist of the classic Mario cast, at least give them different body types rather than just pallet swap colors and a few clothes. The other three Paper Mario games, “64”, “TTYD”, and “Super”, has every right to get away with this due to the large numbers of diversity in NPC species and characters, not just a singular. Not to mention there are at least a few different body proportions of Toads in “TTYD”.
If these Rescue V Toad characters are the only driving force of supporting cast and just mainly original Toad characters in this game primarily, why not make them stand out more and make them different instead of just a jumpsuit?
With that said I’m not planning on buying this game. I can already tell that my experience from this game will be somewhat similar to “Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam”; a good game overall, humor, but lacked original characters, has a predictable straightforward story, and missed opportunities, so the game was pretty much…ok. Instead, I’m going to be patient and checked it from my local library a few weeks later after the game releases on Oct 7th.
That’s right; I won’t have to spend a dime!

Forgettable and mediocre are the greatest things you can ever say about Color Splash. At this point, if your game is forgettable and mediocre, and all it did was copy everything Sticker Star did wrong, is it any better, if not worse than Sticker Star? Sticker Star at least attempted to be something new, something new that turned out to be complete and utter shit, but we can all remember how terrible it was, and at least we can complement it for trying.
Color Splash simply copy and pasted everything Sticker Star did, added another fucking gimmick, the fucking koopalings and called it a day.

So, it might just be me but I think you're being a bit too critical of the game. While I agree CS's design is little more than a palette swap, that alone is not enough to detract away from the experience.
The characters are still somewhat endearing, regardless of name (the first 3 games featured a rich variety of design, but that doesn't necessarily make them good characters) but again, just my 2 cents.
Also, I'm wondering if you have completed the game yet? The story isn't actually that straightforwardly predictable, all things considered.

No, I haven't. As time goes on I'm still learning more and more about this game. Regardless on how it's a vast improvement from Sticker Star, Color Splash is essentially Sticker Star 2.0 and despite the praises it received, my opinion on the game still stands.
Regardless how endearing the cast of Toads and Shy Guys may be, that still doesn't excuse the overall locals in a new environment to consist of only one main species and not have it thrive with other existing species to add more appeal and life to the game. The only reason the devs went with this root and radical change in direction of the series was becuase Miyamoto's insistence that they don't include any new or returing characters in the game for no valid reason.

You do you realize that all the characters being generic and normal Toads was not Miyamoto's idea but the Games producer Tensuke Tanabe, and besides I heard Miyamoto isn't that found of Toad.

Wasn't Tanabe the same guy who ruined Metroid?

You know people mainly bash federation force because of how kiddy the graphics are and not really being a Metroid game, but they don't seem to care about the gameplay itself.

Not only bceause of that, but mostly because Nintendo's choice of developing a spin off instead of a new game since Other M came out in 2010. Also because despite obvliously being a spin-off was bashed for lacking any traditional Metroid series elements and therefore not as closely resembling any other Metroid games.

I am not too hype about it. I mean, they ruined Star Fox, Paper Mario, Animal Crossing and Metroid. Sure you have the games announcied two days ago like SMO and BotW but the minor IPs needs love too.

Are any of their newest games riddled with bugs and glitches like most modern Sega games?

Didn't people say 3d Mario was ruined when they made it more linear, now look at Super Mario Odyssey, proof that Nintendo does listen to fans doesn't it?

It depends of the series. Odyssey have the potential to have a hub world like SM64 and Sunshine. But when it comes to series like I've mentioned, they just ruin them by either "symplyfing" or adding pontiless gimmicks and sacrifies everything else that made said series amazing.

Still a lot better than how other companies like Sega and Konami do it.

Actually Sega is finally listening to their fans thanks to Sonic Mania and the fact they have even contacted with some fans who made amazing fan games. if only they did Sonic Adventure 3, everyone will forget any bad Sonic game like Sonic 2006 and Secret Rings ever existed.

That's pretty much the idea I was going for with the color schemes, but making them stand out a bit differently. Rescue Blue Toad is more of a reference to the mini mushroom.

Thanks.
However, what I've seen so far, the characters in Color Splash don't impress me very much. They have some great personalities, but they all look unappealing and boring.

So if they did an animated series based off of Color Splash, would these be what the Rescue V Toads would look like?
