Young women are most often bound and kneeling to hear their judgment. In this position, they cannot lash out and disturb the decorum of the court. After the sentence is rendered and duly recorded they should in most cases be bit-gagged and hooded before being taken to the waiting jail. It is also helpful to tag the female prisoners with their name, village and sentence so that, for instance, a lass with a death penalty is not confused with one who is only serving a year in the Earl's dungeons for stealing a scrap of bread
