Unfortunately, a very large number of the aspen on the south side of the Grand Mesa where we live are dead or dying from S.A.D. (Sudden Aspen Decline). There are only small pockets of their bright colors this fall. The patchwork colored oak brush is beautiful though, so at least we have that.

I love the aspens and their quaking leaves. Your photo captured their special beauty very nicely

They are neat.. sorry SAD. in MN I have a woods in my
backyard, and in the lst 2 years 90% of our beach nut
trees have died. Its a bummer to watch these majestic
60 and 70 ft. trees dieing.

Unfortunately, it seems to be a tree-dying decade with lots of fingers being pointed at various people, groups, and agencies as the cause, and even more suggestions on how to deal with the situation. Along with the aspen demise, Colorado also has had a huge die-off of lodgepole pines in the last few years due to an epidemic infestation of the Mountain Pine Beetle. You most likely noticed the thousands of dead pines on your way to McClure Pass. If you would be interested in a well-designed, and very readable, PDF presentation by a Fort Collins entomologist, with interesting comments like: "Consensus about attempting this [various beetle suppression techniques] is difficult if more than 1 person in the room" , here's a link to the presentation: [link]

I think there's always hope for our world when people like you care deeply about our wild lands and the animals that depend upon them. Without both, it would be a sad world indeed. I look forward to seeing many more of your beautiful photos

Yes, Its tragic, but I think nature has a way of
taking care of things, if we just don't get in the
way. But man has a way of messing up most everthing
he touches.

I too have wanted a shot like this. You did an amazing job at capturing this scene. I think the lack of contrast really sets the mood. Incredible
