Great shot. I was just this past weekend trying to shoot these little disappearing artists. Your patience clearly paid off.

Yep, you should know I've missed a 100 for everyone
that I keep on these guys.

I'm certainly not surprised. They're not easy to catch. In my neck of the woods, we've got their twins, the Red-Breasted Nuthatch. They are equally as illusive. Haven't managed to get a good shot of one yet. But here's hoping.
Keep up the good work, it's great.

loving your work as always. Do you use any kind of flash when taking your wildlife shots? if so, what's your technique?

When the day is gray and I'm shooting close, I use
the 580EX canon flash on HighSpeed, shutter speed priority,
and generally -1/3 stop on the flash power.

Great! It's not too often that wildlife photographers talk about their flash usage. I'm looking at a Canon 430EXII flash, but wasn't sure what kind of results i could expect. now i know!

How else are we going to pass on what we know?

Very nice, detailed view and I totally agree, Nuthatches are oddly difficult as they appear quite bold, but also flighty, seems every time I have a focal lock, they disappear!

Amen on the disappear. Frequently have
an empty shot, they moved as I pushed the
trigger.

and what a good shot, indeed! I haven't heard of this bird before... Still, it's marvelous! Great details in the bird (feather texture!!) and the bark, too..
man, if I only had money to buy it as a print...
Great!

indeed! the big birds are a piece of cake compared to the little ones. It takes more patience than I usually have

I prefer the big birds, but also enjoy trying for
the perfect shot of any bird. What was perfect last
year is now barely a keeper. Gotta keep improving
gotta keep improving, etc etc etc

Ya its funny how we can take an amazing shot and then come back to it a few months later and feel the need to put it in the trash. lol. If I didn't ever feel like that about shots I would start questioning my improvement
