I got a call from my editors in the X-Men office at Marvel about a month ago to do some design work for some new Sentinels. for the last 30 or so years the Sentinels have had the same general design so Marvel wanted to spruce them up for the new Civil War story line going on this Summer. They didn't give me any other guidelines except to make them each look original and bad-ass. There are 5 all together named Warmachine, Crazytrain, Ogre, Shrapnel, and Megaton. Salvador Larroca designed Warmachine and Crazytrain so I was charged with doing the final 3. I tried to make them characteristic with their name and give them the ominous feel I think a Sentinel should have. Inspiration came from all over the place including Gundam, Transformers, Evangelion, Big O, Thundercats, and the 5th Element. I should also mention that these have all already been approved and are currently being drawn by Marvel artists for this Summer's comics. These designs are great, kind of a mix between transformers and Gundam. I think the second one stays the most true to the original Sentinel, and he looks the most agile. The other two look a bit bulky and cumbersome, but they all look great nonetheless! Excellent work as usual.

wonderful representations of modern day sentinels. These are fantastic! Clean and precise. I'm a fan of the xmen and up until recently have their sentinel counterparts been...what's the word...lacking? these look much stronger, more ferocious and overall just sleeker. Nicely done Mark.

haha.. yup. i could definitely see that your inspiration came from gundam as well. the 3rd one seems to have lost of influence from gundam gp02a physalis. congrats on the designs being approved. they roxxor my boxxors.. hard..

I'm this humongous closet mecha fan so I get all mooshy when I see big, badass giant robots. This definitely qualifies XD. I wish I owned one

Finally, for once, the sentinals are badass and scary as all hell.
Unlike the original design, of which I so always thought looked like rejected action figures, these acually look likee they'd make any of the X-Men shit their pants.
I'm so excited for this stroyline. ^_^

One thing I notice about drawing successful sentinels, mechs, and stuff like that, it's all based off the human form. The wires/tubes/gadgets/etc., all connect from the clavicle (collar bone) to behind or at the ear. I'm also taking notice to how you did the groin region, as thats one reason I stay away from drawing these types of things - that area never looks good when I draw it. I saved this picture so I'd have a reference in case I decide to try and tackle these things. Excellent job I must say - especially on the hands.

i like the middle one, but with out those guns, i remember or think i remember the sentinals not having guns, they did have tentacles like omega red any way FANTASTIC love them

I can see so much of the influences shining through. It's like you grabbed the most imposing parts of each of the best designers easthetics and brought them together in your own way.. Wicked.
The design work itself is so clean and tight, I could stare at these designs for hours.

Original and Bad Ass indeed! I can definatly see the influences. What is on the Middle one's back, tho? Is that some kind of rocket or flight pack. Regardless, I can't wait to see these beasts in the comics. I hope the X-Men can stand up to them. I'd be running like a madman.

I think you do great work. The one with the guns sticking from his bum is humorous to me. The most asthetically pleasing one is the middle....but not that you're going for asthetics....the one that scares me is the first! Hooray sentinals!

Those are some really wicked designs. I like the mecha feeling they've got. After all, the old sentis already had a mecha feeling, but one that resembled more like Mazinger Z...
