I got a call from my editors in the X-Men office at Marvel about a month ago to do some design work for some new Sentinels. for the last 30 or so years the Sentinels have had the same general design so Marvel wanted to spruce them up for the new Civil War story line going on this Summer. They didn't give me any other guidelines except to make them each look original and bad-ass. There are 5 all together named Warmachine, Crazytrain, Ogre, Shrapnel, and Megaton. Salvador Larroca designed Warmachine and Crazytrain so I was charged with doing the final 3. I tried to make them characteristic with their name and give them the ominous feel I think a Sentinel should have. Inspiration came from all over the place including Gundam, Transformers, Evangelion, Big O, Thundercats, and the 5th Element. I should also mention that these have all already been approved and are currently being drawn by Marvel artists for this Summer's comics. From left to right they remind me of; Onslaught, an Eva, and a the Hulk version of Sentinals.

Wow these are frakin awsome and would go as far assaying there better than the orignal's these seem to have a much more modern feel to how mecha sentinals would be designed in todays world.

All excellent designs well done. The first one stnad out the most for me, in a good way. A lot of character, still with the menace that freaked me out about the old Sentinels.

the first one (front and back) remind me of the hard-assed hunters from the Halo games.
Either way these are kik ass designs and the detail is amazing, these must have taken you quite some time to draw.

Man, these are fantastic!, middle one's my favourite, one thing did make me smile about him though, the screws holding on the shoulder guards...Can you imagine the size of that screwdriver!? It must be a killer to lift.

I don't really think these fit in an X-Men book. Especially Civil War, where it seems like they're trying to make things more relatible to the real world. These belong in a Transformers book.
I don't mean to take away from the artwork at all, I just can't see these in X-Men. Maybe an X-Men/Transformers one-shot or something.

Nice work as usual Mark.....But dude they look a little Clunky and sluggish (for what little I know about the X-Men the Sentinels were always kinda slow) especially the last design....have you looked at any of the designs from Konami's "ZONE of the ENDERS the Second RUNnER"? cool weapons and Lots of intense mecha action---- Linky : [link]

I love them all, but Ogre kinda has some turn-offs for me. Mainly everything is below the waist. I don't think the pointy-tipped boots and tiny legs really go along too well with the rest of the character and other sentinels. Naturally, the massive upper body is in relation to his namesake, but the proportion of the legs seems a bit extreme. And unfortunately, the first thing that struck me about the boots was (forgive me) elvishness.
Good thing Evangelion had an Angel with the arm-piston thing, or else people might think you were completely ripping off Big O
I have no problem with the other two, except that, like others have said, they look a bit anime-ish. Then again, that could just be because anime was the first to incorporate giant, super-high-tech humanoid machines into their storylines. So, really, that looks like a bit of a bias - I'll keep my mouth shut.
Regardless, it's not my decision and I'm sure the people whose job it is to okay these things know better than I do what should be in their comics.
