Description All you need is 2 triangles pointed towards each other and over lapping. This automatically creates shoulders, waist and hip. Very quick, very simple but a heck of a lot more information than the typical stick figure drawings you see.

When you have the "skeleton" looking pretty good you can have fun with it by adding a face, hair and clothes. I'll talk about drawing the face, hands, feet, hair and clothing for the next 2 months.

Look at these when trying to add muscle and skin:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've looked at many how to draw books for people and animals over the years but they usually target people who have drawn a great deal or taken lessons and frustrate the true beginners with the drawing of odd abstract shapes. If the odd shape looks off it just messes up the whole drawing down the line.

This is for people don't normally draw and have never really tackled drawing people. There is more than one way to approach this but for me, I use triangles. We all know what triangles are and could always use the practice of drawing nice triangles and straight lines.

Could you adjust the size of the triangles to make different body types of would you do something else?

I have trouble not just drawing the skeleton in a good pose, but also drawing over the skeleton too, it hardly come out good. I want to learn how to draw the male and female body from scratch using the skeleton, also add on the fact that I'm also learning how to draw hands, different facial expression, drawing from different angles just so much stuff I want to get better at, but I'm still going to practice with all of it, just don't know where to start.

Drawing the human form is quite complicated. There is a lot going on. It needs to be broken down into parts. Focus on one thing at a time. Practicing the basic skeleton makes sure you have a grasp of proportion. That will translate in to better drawings as you focus on other things. It is a slow gradual build up of skills that takes many years. Be patient with yourself.

It doesn't necessarily take many years. It really depends on how and how much time one practices. Anyways, I like your method.Β

You're very welcome! You're really good with drawing cars. Β Being able to draw people will be a nice thing to combine with it. Happy drawing!

Oh thank you! It has taken years for me to get as good as i am with cars, so i've been putting off learning people because i just wish it wouldn't take just as long to get as good with people as cars. But I can only get better if i try. Thanks for helping me get started!

The skills you gathered from drawing cars is transferable to drawing other things. Β The steadiness of your hands, you more developed sense of lines, shapes and colors will transfer to the drawing of people. Β You are not going to be starting from scratch even though you think you are. It won't take as long as you did learning to draw cars.

Is this purely a female structure, because it appears that way?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Diana-Huang In reply to MR-AwEsOmE01 [2012-03-27 03:24:42 +0000 UTC]

These are averages. For young people the differences in body shapes have not kicked in yet. Women are depicted as having a larger bottom triangle to represent larger hips along with big chests like this --> [link] Men as a whole are depicted as having larger upper triangle for broad chest and shoulders like this --> [link] But I have seen boys and girls, men and women where the upper and lower triangles are fairly even and so when the muscles and skin are in place the whole upper body looks like a long rectangle.

I wish I could draw, I have no sense of preportion when drawing and they look like plastercine on a free form jazz session (all wobbally and out of place)

Plus I have no imagination

But im glad other people(like yourseleves)can draw

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Diana-Huang In reply to DJFlat [2009-07-22 14:50:55 +0000 UTC]

The imagination comes more easily when you got the basic skills down. I tell my student its a matter of having the passion to keep practicing. Just like learning to play music, practice makes perfect. Feel free to try out the easier lessons I have.
