Description ENGLISH VERSION FULLY REDONE.
FRENCH VERSION COMING SOON

Just for the record, this tutorial has already been online for two years.

Updated version now includes :

- tips about blending,
- a detailed schema about facial proportions,
- screenshots of the tools used and tips about these tools
- I fixed some typos.

About blending : NO, there's no specific tool used, I just used the paintbrush as mentionned clearly in the tutorial.
Pretty please guys, READ the tutorial before asking.
I've already received 4 notes about blending yesterday some seconds right after I reposed the tutorial, I know that part was somehow missing in the previous tutorial since I had not explained it in a very detailed way with painted examples (I thought that was clear enough but it apparently wasn't) but it's now fully explained.
Thank you!

I won't reply to any question about things already explained here unless someone has got real trouble figuring them out as I've got way too many other things to do so please read the tut carefully

TECHNICAL STUFF

I've used Photoshop CS3 to paint this, you can download a free trial version on Adobe's website if you don't have it yet! Older versions will work too of course. I'm not sure you can find the Liquify tool in versions older than Photoshop CS though....

Original painting resolution : 9000 x 6714px, 300 dpi. No need to paint such a big image though... I just wanted to be able to print it on a very large size

I'm just a bit confused.... My sister keeps telling me confusing things about Photoshop CS. I have CS5.1 but is it just for photo manipulation or drawing, too? Would I use Illustrator for drawing? I can't seem to figure out illustrator....

CS5 can be used for both photo manips. and drawing and anything else you can think of. You could even draw something in pencil, scan it to your computor, and add color if you wanted.

Even though I realize that this post has been on DA for a numerous amount of years... I still would like to thank you for taking the time and effort to make this extremely helpful tutorial on how to paint with PS.

It truly was so very generous of you to share a bit of your digital painting expertise with the rest of cyberspace. Thanks again.

Excuse me, but I have a question about brush settings...

Is there a way to create a brush that "behaves" like the Pen Pressure function? That is to say, a brush that starts thin, then thick, then fades to thin again? Or opaque > visible > opaque again?

For the longest time I've been trying to mess with settings to create such a thing but it's like it can't be done. I'm more adjusted to a Mouse than a pen tablet regardless, but if there is a way I'd like to know it..

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OrenjiJuusu In reply to darkside-ky [2012-03-08 22:57:38 +0000 UTC]

You can use the pen tool. Have it make a line, not a shape layer. Pick the settings on your paint brush tool, then use the pen tool to make a line. Then right-click and select "Stroke Path". Pick the brush tool, and check the simulate pressure box.

How low do you put your opacity when you blend? i just can't seem to get blending I always seem to end up with a lot of ridge looking marks? should i just blend for longer or maybe I'm doing something else wrong? I know you explained it, and i've read it a few times but i don't know what I'm doing wrong any suggestions?

Having just bought a tablet and trying to transition from traditional to some digital - this was really helpful! Still a whole lot different blending when you can't just reach out and use your finger or a blending stump! =b

A visually stunning conclusion picture, and a very well-thought guide new people like myself, who want to learn how to do this very same style of work!

I'm equally happy knowing that you used the same version of photoshop I've got (Mine is much more underused at the moment unfortunately lol)

My only ever so slight dislike (teeny weeny dislike) is that occasionally near the start it seemed a little too fast paced, for people at certain stages, however it's not too much of a problem. I myself am ever so slightly confused about the brush management side of things, however, most points were considered in the guide which still makes it ace

9.5/10 overall
