This is the first part of a big skintone painting tutorial I did last year. (it just wasn't until now that I found the time to assemble everything and finish it)
Please note that this is just "my" way to learn/paint/observe, and I can't guarantee that it'll make things "click" for everybody; I'm not a teacher after all and still have SO much to learn!
However, I'll be glad if it is helpful to anybody; and if you have questions, just let me know and I'll try my best to answer them.

The whole tutorial is going to consist of about 3 to 4 parts, depending how much text and images I can squeeze into one file without making it too heavy. XD

Since I'm a firm believer in learning-by-doing, I've come up with a practical exercise in each of these tutorial parts. To learn how to paint, there's no other way than actually doing it.

By the way, I put this in the "Photoshop" category since I used Photoshop here (with a Wacom Intuos tablet), but ANY painting program (Gimp, Painter, SAI, Opencanvas) can be used; since this isn't a software-specific tutorial - it's just about painting skintones!

Have fun, and thank you for reading!

Thank you for this great tutorial!
ing it for keeps! ^_^

I tried the colour palette for "pale skin" (number four), but as I was using watercolour pencils, I could only match three colours (magenta, pink, brown).

The black-and-white reference I used: [link]
My picture (fanart): [link]

I am inordinately pleased with the result!
Sowwy! This is the first time I've tried skin-tone colouring

Thanks again!

awesome tutorial, an very good tip about that exercise, it makes total sense, but sometimes you are so focus in what you're doing wrong that you don't see ways out.
I'll follow your advice and of curse this

Thanks for posting, this it is very helpful. I had no idea there were so many shades in skin. Mine always looks flat, I didn't realize I wasn't using enough variation.

Thanks again!

This is a really awesome tutorial, and though I am not as much into digital painting, it has given me some insignts into how I might experiment with my traditional paintings when doing skin tones.

good points, one thing i tell people about learning to pick the right colors is use high res and non pixellated photographs, because the colors you think they are, never are
