This is insane.  Where in the world do you find all the little objects to use?

They are everywhere. The world is full of junk. Its just a matter of recognizing it as useful.

Would recognizing the junk as useful come after getting the basic aesthetic of assemblage down first though?  I see junk at antique malls all the time and think it would be awesome to use, but I can never picture it in a piece

Most of my inventory comes from flea markets, garage sales, the city dump, pick up off the streets of SF and donations from folks clearing out their junk drawers, garages, basements, etc.  A former partner of mine was a handyman and regularly brought home handfuls of random parts & bits from repair jobs.  Antique malls have nice things but they are perhaps "too nice" for my purposes. I prefer things that are busted and broken and somewhat disfigured. The less distinguishable an item is from what it was, the further my imagination is ready to transform into something else. . I also like really old, very weathered and aged items. I imagine them to have a spirit (or ghost) that becomes my muse.
I don't know if there is a basic aesthetic of assemblage to get down. There are so many differing variations and expressions of the medium.  I encourage you to take a look at the Assemblage-Artist group to view some of the others: assemblage-artists.deviantart.…
The best way to pick it up is to simply dive in. It took me a couple years to develop and hone into my personal aesthetic - but when I did it was an organic process that came effortlessly.

I would imagine you take a lot of junk old machines or devices apart as well to collect bits.  Do you ever buy one of those "too nice" items just to muck it up and basically start over with the item?

Ah, nice I didn't know of this group.  I'll peep it and see whatcha mean.

I was hoping there was more to it then just the dive in method... I think I've used that method with ever of medium I've used.  I guess it won't hurt to take the dive again then.  I imagine there are definitely some tools of the trade I would need to pick up first though, haha.

No, if an old item has remained in good working condition and shape for many reasons then I like to leave it intact.  And  if those elements apply, then its usually not cost effective for my purposes.

Basic tools of the trade might consist of a drill, hammer, pliers, a variety of glues and your imagination.

Well...it certainly displays the amount of thought put into it.

So often, you see assemblages that are just thrown together....seemingly without consideration to the whole, so I am always gratified to find pieces that, like this, are just.....superb.

Thank you hummbuzz! This one does have many things going on....I tried to arrange them so the eye never grew tired of searching them out.   It's buyer bought it without a moments hesitation. I look forward to installing it soon in her home.
