A while back I was talking with someone about the near-impossibility of avoiding romance in fanart and fanfics of that most determinedly anti-romantic show ever, Invader Zim. Anyone and everyone, male, female, Irken, human, hybrid, hermaphrodite, canon and OC gets paired up with everyone else. No possible combination has been left out, and she wondered what we'd see next, "Dib/Shoehorn"?I had a good laugh and promptly forgot about it, or thought I did. Over here they take off their shoes every time they go indoors, and after this conversation, every time I touched a shoehorn, a grin would pull on my face.
Finally I drew this, and ~Tabbykat35 , it's for YOU!

Well, especially Dib in this regard. For his many great attributes, he always has a hard time reading people. I don't think he meant to treat Gretchen badly, though...he mostly seemed confused by her actions.

Even though I like some pairings in IZ, some are really stupid. Some people seem to think "Oh, this characters talked to each other, they must be in love!" even if this characters hate each other.
But such pairings are in every fandom....

Hey, sorry for the lateness in comments. 
It IS really weird, how IZ is the most asexual, aromantic (if not decidedly ANTI in both cases, given the Tak episode) show I can think of, and yet people make all these weird and often downright dumb pairings. Why can't people just take the show for what it is and not try to add in an element that's completely foreign to it?
His expression is hilariously wonky and a bit creepy, just because it's so... not Dib. O_o But that is the point, so it works. I like how you positioned him, too.
Does it count as slash when the other person or object in the pairing is genderless?

Nah, I couldn't, not for long. There'd be no point in punishing the innocent for the guilty.
I can stomach a little tinkering, stand some alternative interpretations, but not completely inverting it like this. It sure makes you wonder how they could stand to watch the original show AS IT WAS at all, doesn't it?

Same here. I mean, it's different, taking INFERENCES from the actual canon's events and going in a certain direction with them, but doing something like pairing two people, especially ENEMIES, because "its so uber kawaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiii XDDD" when it has no place in the actual world is pointless and violating the original.
But then again, the "fans" in question are probably coming to the show with their own assumptions and wishes as to what to see, and forget all too easily that this is about an alien that comes from a planet where reproduction is done by cloning, and a kid who's probably no older than 12 and too preoccupied with gaining acceptance and proving himself to be worried about what most other people are thinking about. :\ They're just using the characters as means of their own wish fulfillment. The characters aren't themselves as we know them in such people's minds.... they're just a flat representation of them, or just a body to do as the "fan" wishes. >>
You have a point there... and I've occasionally heard people refer to as "slash" any weird pairing that doesn't fit the normal bounds of gender/species, whatever, so.... it fits.
