Description

For the first ten years of the war, it could have been called civilized compared to the second ten years. Most fighting was over holding territory and not about the killing of their enemy, as during that time, though they were fighting, they had been friends. Maneuvering, and positioning was the name of the game, and though death was common, there was still a sense of respect between the ponies and zebras.

This could be seen in how equestria fought, using powerful and precise weapons, focusing more on subduing their opponents through skill and intelligence. Often this fighting would take place over long stretches of land, with both sides in bunkers and trenches, taking potshots at each other. When actions were needed, night raids would happen, and they would take the utmost care to take prisoners alive and mostly unharmed. If a zebra was going to die, they wanted it to be quick and painless. They were civilized after all.

Everything changed after the little horn massacre, along with it the way ponies fought. Replacing the more civilized calanged of skill and maneuvering was a savage rage, with fighting becoming closer, and less care for precision. Fully automatic guns would be issued to every troop, and encouraged to fire wildly at their enemy.

The trenches and bunkers once used to keep a distance from each other now we're standing grounds for massive raids, where no zebra would be taken alive. Ponies would don armor expecting to be shot, and given chems to keep on fighting. Quickly blood would flow, and with it more cries for hatred and revenge.

Celestia Doctrian gun history -

Originally developed by Griffionston Mechanics, most of the guns used early in the war were converted for pony use by Colt Manufacturing. Griffonstone Mechanics was a small weapons development company that copied much of the guns they made from Mouser Munitions, for the use of hunting of animals and monsters. When Equestria had a need for guns, and the Zebras had shit them out from using Mouser Munitions, Griffonstone Mechanics jumped at the chance to make money.

Colt Manufacturing, though made several revolvers, had long left the weapons businesses, focusing more on more festive items. Party cannons, firework launchers, and even celebration tanks was what they were known for, but when war loomed, and a request was made, Colt Manufacturing stepped up. With their knowledge of how to make guns for ponies, and several factories to make them with, they quickly teamed up with Griffionston Mechanics to convert their .45 auto pistol for pony use, and the production of rifles for ponies in mind. Soon their guns were in the hooves of the troops, and Equestria could take back lost territory.

Needing more weapons, the Windcesters flew down from the Foal Mountains to aid Equestria. The Windchesters being an old weapons production company and family business, they had a different view on guns and their use, to an almost reverent degree. What they presented to Equestria was the Trench Gun, a pump action shotgun that can be used as a spear, of which was capable of rapid fire known as slam firing. Seen as a savage and cruel weapon, it was not originally adopted by the Equestria military. But would be taken in by troops who bought the guns themselves, wanting a gun better suited at fending off Zebra spear charges. Soon the shotgun would obtain infamy in the war as the Zebras would call for the gun to be banned and even higher ups in Equestra would denounce their use. The gun would later be officially adopted by the equestria military due to its heroic reliability and effectiveness to keep Zebras away. Even after it’s official phasing out, the Trench Gun would be secretly passed between troops and see combat through the entire war,

More than six years through the war Griffionston Mechanics would produce what they called their crown jewel of guns, the Griffionston Typewriter. Developed in secret by the griffin Gabrialla, under the disguise of making a more efficient typewriter, the first SMG would enter the fight, and cause the Zebras to pause. The gun was not only loved in the trenches, but would also be seen on the silver screen as the gun of heroes and villains alike, most famously in the hooves of Shadow Spade, played by Rarity. The SMG would see its original form be made more efficient for war as the years went on, up to the day it was phased out for smaller and lighter SMG’s. Even after it was no longer officially used by the military, the Griffionston Typewriter would be kept in reserve by national guards and law enforcement, along with being a coveted collectors item.

Luna Doctrian gun history -

From the civilian market would rise Ironshod Firearms, with the catchphrase, "How do you like them apples?" They were founded by the Apple family in ponyville and would make civilian versions of the guns used in the war. With interest in guns at an all time high, they would quickly become rich enough to expand across equestria, flooding the land with guns. Things would change after the Little Horn massacre, and Applejacks rise to power as the Ministry Mare of the Ministry of Wartime Technology. Through family connections, Ironshod would secure many weapons contracts and push out the other companies from the market.

Their first successful contract, and as many saw, a sigh of things to come, was the IF-9 Crime Stopper. Through their family contacts, and a hefty buttering up to Rarity, they advertised the IF-9 as the Griffionston Typewriter of shotguns, but cheaper and more powerful. It was no secret that many ponies, Rarity among most of all, were looking to replace the Trench Gun with almost anything, and  Ironshod Firearms knew who to talk to and what to say to do just that with their own gun. Everypony was enamored with the shotgun, as it had a higher capacity with its drum magazine and was capable of fully automatic fire. Along with the stigma of shotguns being a savage and cruel weapon no longer applying, the Equertia military ordered a vast amount of these guns before the final product was even finished.

On the battlefield, the IF-9 would develop its own infamy, but for the exact opposite reason from the Trench Gun. The Crime Stopper, or as called by the troops, the “Stop Fighter” would regularly jam, misfire, or not even be able to load its ammunition properly. With a fixed drum magazine, it was harder to load than a pump action, and if dirt got inside (and commonly did) the revolver mechanize would jam. When fired, the gas operated fully automatic system would often not be able to fully rotate the magazine and jam, or be too rough and brake it altogether. Overall the gun was unreliable and hated, even after the war. Ironshod would fix the problems over time, turning it into a semi auto gun, and making the magazine removable, which only improved the gun by a bit, and never fixed its reputation.

Ironshod would get its first true success with the IF-21 Caramel, a recoil assisted, muzzle fired 10mm pistol. Though complex in it’s construction, and difficult to repair, the gun was considerably cheaper to make and even easier to fire. Oversawed by Applejack and aided by Gabrialla, the IF-21 was not just a hit with the troops, but in the civilian market too, and with how cheap it was to make, the gun was easily replaced over having it repaired. The gun was also exceptionally modular and moddable, allowing it to be used in almost any combat situation, thus replacing every side arm in the equestria military, from ground to air.

The next big innovation from Ironshod would come with the IF-44 Angel Bunny, taking everything they learned from the IF-21 and putting it into a 10mm SMG. even making it muzzle fired, which was unheard of through the war. Desperate to find a new SMG for the war, the equestrian military purchased the new gun sight unseen, and this time they were not disappointed. Though not the lightest gun, anypony with some strength can effectively use it with no trouble, and a skilled pony is downright deadly. Just like the IF-21, the IF-44 was very cheaply made, reliable, and easy to replace, though not as durable as the IF-21.

After the success of the IF-21, Applejack and Gabriella would work on what would be their crown project as guns go, the IF-64 Bloomberg. A select fire, intermittent cartridge assault rifle. Taking everything that was to be known from rifle manufacturing, the IF-64 proved to be a solid all rounder rifle that anypony could use effectively and fully rely on. Though not the most powerful gun, it was cheap to make without cutting cost, and simple to repair, effectively cutting cost dramatically through its use in the war. Many troops would become attached to their IF-64’s, calling them a trusted friend, and would even refuse to part with them when discharged from duty. Even 200 years after the war, some IF-64’s are still used, some still using most of their old parts, and are expected to survive another 200 years.

Though proving themselves in the end, Ironshod was steeped in scandal and corruption from the bottom up, giving Applejack no end of headaches. As for their competitions, Colt would be absorbed by Ironshod, becoming nothing more than a historical factory that produced neither weapons nor toys. Griffonstone Mechanics would be pushed out of the equestrian market, and though they would work with the MoWT, much of their dealing with equestria at large would be as maintenance engineers for the big factory machines, or as weapon smugglers. The Windcheters would find themselves driven from their ancestral home out of disgust. Some stayed in equestria to work with the Ministry of Awesome for the Plasma weapons project. But most would leave Equestria entirely to get away from the war.
