Description
It is unknown when the first Raider came to be, or when the ponies of Equestria started calling them raiders. But there are some wartime ghouls who believe it started even before the end of the war, as the chemed out and traumatized citizens of Equestria. Before the bombs dropped Equestria was suffering from an epidemic of chem abuse and wartime stress disorder, making much of the population erratic and irrational if not medicated. This was only made worse by the constant need to put on a fake face and pretend everything was fine. This would lead to psychotic breakdowns or the development of antisocial hobbies and habits.
During this time, it was not unheard of ponies forming mobs and going after suspected spies, or simply devolving into riots. The rioting got so bad in some places that power armor would be sent in to quell them. The news print would call these ponies raiders to denounce their actions, a name that would stick.
So after the bombs fell, and anarchy took over, among thise who survived were the alredy unhindged and violent ponies. The level of violence the early raiders got up to being more kin to a phycotic explosion then the slow burn that most wastelanders would come to know. This partially was due to all the guns and ammo still lying about, from vending machines and gun stores, to abandoned military bases and survivalist stockpiles. The hoards of the early raiders could indulge in their wildest fantasies all while being so armed that they were an army in themselves. Thus contributing to the fall of Equestria as any and all attempts to reassert civilization would be targeted by the hoards of mad ponies, and thoroughly violated.
But the fatal flaw of the early raiders would eventually creep in as the amount of ponies they could target would dwindle, and their supplies of caps and food would run dry. Infighting, suiside and chem overdoses would annihilate the early raiders. With most larger surviving groups eventually being wiped out by the Steel Rangers who sought to reclaim technology the raiders had. An event that solidified the idea in the rangers heads that technology must be kept out of the hooves of lesser ponies.
Generations later, raiders would still persist, but now from ponies struggling to survive in an irradiated land of unending cloud cover. Either recruited from chem dens or from the many desperate and starving ponies, the raider clans, tribes, and crews pop up anywhere and everywhere, with no end in sight. This would create the term "going raider" to depict a ponies fall into barbarism.
These raiders are known for both their laziness, and phycotic cruelty, as most wish to avoid any work and just get high and or drunk. This leads them to abusing each other into doing any kind of work, creating a cycle of violence within any raider group. The longer a raider group lasts, the more violent they become, and if not unified behind a strong leader, an ideal, faith, or a shared hatred, they will inevitably rip themsles apart.
The IF-1 "seed spitter" was the first gun developed by the company Ironshod Firearms, which was formed by several members of the Apple family to help with the war effort in their own way. Building a factory on their land in much the same way as a barn, they would produce colt pistols and rifles for the military, gaining them a lot of money from an Equestria in desperate need of guns. Using that money they would build many more simple factories, and soon enough of 5hem that they could focus on making their own guns.
The IF-1 was made and sold as the everypony gun, simple, easy to use, light on recoil, and most importantly of all, cheap. This revolver would become the first gun any civil pony would ever use, and helped jumpstart the gun culture in Equestria. Even after taking over the market, Ironshod would continue making the IF-1, even long after its popularity had waned, being seen used more by criminals than honest ponies. This was mainly due to how easily accessible the gun was, with it literally being sold in vending machines or in bulk at gun shops.
Raiders would often give these gun to their newest members who were not chem mad, as a gun is still a gun, even if it's shit compared to almost any other.
Ironshod would develop the IF-2 soon after the IF-1, their attempt to make a cheap semi automatic pistol with more kick to it. They were successful, but the "Farm Guard" was anything but pretty. A simple blowback, Ironshod fixed the recoile problem by just making the gun heavier on top. Despite its flaws, the gun was rather popular, and sold rapidly, outshining the IF-1. S9 popular, the 10mm would become Ironshod's signature ammo caliber, and would be pushed for most of their small arms to be in 10mm.
Due to the mass stockpiles of the IF-2, being another gun found in vending machines, it could be found all over the wasteland, and used by every kind of wastelander. Though between the IF-2 and the IF-21, everypony would prefer the more reliable IF-21. Still, due to the IF-2's simple design, the gun early brakes, and after 200 years is just as "good" as it was when first made.
Though not an original Ironshod Firearms design, they would buy and produce the Trottingham 9mm SMG (later listed as the IF-7) in mass quantities, hoping to replace the Griffonstone Typewriter as the military SMG. This would fail, but it would lead to Rarity suggesting that they could replace the Trench Gun instead. Ass SMG's go the "Trot 9" would find success in civilian and overseas markets. With how inexpensive the gun was, anypony could arm their militia with military grade arms if they settled for the Trot 9. Unfortunately, due to it being side loaded, it was a rather unpopular gun among pegasus, who often used two SMG's on battle saddles, something the Trot 9 was not built for.
After the war, the Trot 9 would be considerably hated by the surviving Zebras of the fallen Zebra Empire, as every barbaran or mad group would be armed with Trot 9's. Even new ones would be made by those with the skill and resources, though rarely ever as good. The SMG would also be heavily modified by such raider groups, adding their own drum magazines or attaching bayonets to them. This gun would see it be remade and improved as the Pipe SMG "Burp Gun" though only by a small margin, and by turning the magazine vertically.
Ironshod's first real military gun, the IF-8 would become the Equestria Military's transition rifle as they phased out the Battle Rifle. Though it worked well as an automatic rifle,it was only ever okay as a gun. Nearther bad or all that good, just okay. The "Harvester" would do its job and then be quickly replaced by the IF-64 "Bloomberg" as soon as the new rifle was available. Not wanting to miss out on an opportunity, Ironshod would sell the rifle to civilian markets as a gun used by the military, often as magazine ads to be mail ordered. Though it would never get away from its "okay" reputation, the IF-8 would find its way into almost every stockpiles of guns, be it military or civilian.
Even after 200 years, the IF-8 can still be found and used by wastelanders, though unlike the IF-64, the IF-8 has not fared as well. Rusted and held together by duct tape, it is rare to find any of the rifles in any kind of good condition, even if found in an untouched stockpile. Unsurprisingly, the IF-8 is often found by raiders, and modified to a maddening degree, changed to the point that the original rifle is unrecognizable. But if you want an automatic 5.56 rifle, and cant get a IF-64, the IF-8 is an okay substitute.
Though absolutely saturated with guns, the gun culture of Equestria had grown to the point that many ponies romanticized the idea of making their own guns. The simple pipe gun would come from that romanticism, often as the first gun most ponies would make, and modify. This skill would them become invaluable after the bombs dropped and resources would become scarce. Most commonly a group would be sitting on a stockpile of ammo that they don't have many guns that use it, so pipe guns are made in those calibers. Other times the pipe gun is made with black powder ammo in mind, allowing a poor settlement to have guns.
In the wasteland even raiders know how to make pipe guns, and worse, give them scopes. A scoped, long barrel pipe gun is deceptively a dangerous sniper rifle, and often used by the least twitchy members of a raider group. Many of the potential heroes of the wasteland would find themselves crippled by a raider sniper, and then dragged away for a fate worse than death.
Though there are many SMG's considered as bad that can be found in the wasteland, nothing is as iconicly bad as a scrap yard SMG. Drawn up by ponies who wanted to make their own SMG, but had no gunsmithing experience, this SMG would be put on gun magazines all over Equestria, and be issued outside the country. Partly used as propaganda, and a way for those under Zebra occupation to make their own SMG, the Scrap Yard SMG would pop anywhere where gun ownership was banned, and be a pain in the flank for all authority.
In the wasteland, it is not uncommon for raiders to capture ponies and make them make new guns for them, often demanding Scrap Yard SMG's. Though a considerably bad SMG, it is still an SMG, and when they have a lot of bullets to shoot, raiders will see those bullets used. Strangely enough, raiders will often hold onto this gun with pride, customizing it to a fetisistic degree. Also its ability to be barreled in larger calibers has given birth to some monster Scrap Yard SMG's, some in rifle caliber.
Overall, raiders are not feared for their skill in battle, or any kind of tactics. What ponies fear is what the raiders will do if they are captured the raiders. So in the end, just like with the spiky armor, a raider relies more on fear than anything else to get what they wny. Nothing they use can be considered good, and for a group who prays on the weak, that's more than enough to get what they want. But if somepony resists, well they have guns, and will use them. Yes, for those true heroes of the wasteland, raiders are more a nuisance than a threight, but all it takes is one misstep, or to run out of ammo, and the raiders will be on them like a pack of hungry coyotes, dragging that hero off to be torchered until they die.
