Description
Fallout: Equestria lore.
Ironshod Firearms.
Starting out as a way for the Apple Family's to support the war effort, the Idea of then making their own guns and becoming a monopoly in the arms industry had not crossed their minds. What started out as just a few simple munitions and gun conversion factors would propel the Apple family from simple farmers to the wealthiest family in Equestria.
Early in the war, Equestria nearly lost it all as the Zebra war machine marched right for Equestria, only stopped by an ill prepared and even less equipped army of ponies. The only thing holding the Zebras back was powerful unicorns backed by Celestia and Luna. During this push, Equestria was in a mad dash to convert griffin guns for the use by ponies, with many volunteers working nonstop. Among the biggest contributors being the exceptionally large Apple family.
Once the war cooled down, and Equestria was given breathing room, many of the Apple family would join the war itself, but many others would stay with Colt in producing guns and ammo. After a few years, and some dissatisfaction with how Cold ran their factories, most of the Apple family working for them would leave to build their own factory.
Calling their business Ironshod Firearms, they would do what they already had been doing for years, but with earth pony know-how, were more efficient. It didn't take long for Celestia to fund Ironshod to build more, and more advanced factories as the war was clearly not settling down.
Through the contracts, Ironshod would be able to build enough factories that they could start selling to the civilian market, which greatly increased their profits. Though they only made and sold already existing guns, the demand was there, and soon they would start looking to make their own original guns.
Nere the end of Celestia's rule, Ironshod would produce several knock off original guns, of which ranged from poor to mediocre quality. A clear showing in their actual ability to make guns not just copped. The most famous of them being the IF-8, which though innovative at the time, and made for the Equestria military, was never well received. Though compared to the IF-9 shotgun, the automatic rifle would be seen as vastly superior. Unfortunately, just like with the IF-9, Ironshod would over produce the IF-8 without any idea how many they would be able to sell, but unlike the IF-9, there was no military contract to take the guns. Something which would become a common problem of Ironshod.
The excessive amount of cheap guns Ironshod had produced would prove to become a major problem, as it made a lot of dead inventory for their warehouses. And with potential military contracts coming their way through the newly founded Ministry of Wartime Technology, they needed to free upmas much space as possible.
The solution: blind selling. Ironshod would find wny way possible to sell the guns, from putting out magazines ads for mail order guns to even making vending machines in which the guns were sold. If there was a way to get the guns out of storage and make some money back from it, Ironshod did it, and with a patriotic flair.
The mass selling, and rubbing hooves with the Ministries would pay off, securing many of the war contracts to produce newer guns. Also the years of weapons development would produce the first truly good gun, the IF-21. Using a recoil reduction mechanism in the gun, while making it as cheaply as possible, Ironshod would then vastly over produce the pistol, already predicting maintenance issues for it.
With the success of the IF-21, and their connections from within the Ministries, greed would quickly set in, and Ironshod would move to corner the market. Not just taking all the military contracts, Ironshod would start producing their own versions of guns made by other companies, but at a loss. On top of that, Ironshod would convince the Ministries to start regulating the market, causing gun manufacturing to become far more expensive. Something in which Ironshod had the money to afford.
One such move was the production of the IF-18, Ironshods version of Colts! Friend Maker. In a short few years, almost all rival companies would have either left Equestria, or become absorbed by Ironshod. With a monopoly, Ironshod was effectively the most powerful company in Equestria, with the Apple family effectively royalty in their own right.
Applejack's attention would eventually return to her family, and unamused by their actions, along with a drop in the already low quality of guns, she would attempt to rein them in. Personally getting involved in the affairs of Ironshod, a rift would form between Applejack and the rest of her family, causing many fights, and even more drinking. But in time she would manage to bring her family back to sanity, though the time would be short lived.
In the last few years, Ironshod would produce the IF-64, a rifle seen as the pinnacle of pony ballistics. Despite Equestria's plan to transition to magical energy weapons, the IF-64 was a welcomed refit to the militat arsenal, and proved that Ironshod could actually produce good guns. The rifle would be produced in vast numbers, and stored in military stockpiles all over Equestria for the possible megaspell apocalypse.
This stockpiling would send a message to Ironshod, and with their vast wealth, they would finally start investing in the future, but mainly in Stable-Tec, military bunkers, and robot workers.
When the war came to its final conclusion, most Ironshod factories were so automated that the loss of life in them when megaspells went off was relatively low, and security robots would prevent looting. As for the Apple family, though many would die, many more would find their way into Stables, or find shelter with the Steel Rangers. In some pockets of the world Ironshod would survive, for a time, but their guns would in the end, outlive them, along with a legacy of quantary over quality.
