Description
Very simple scene of some of pirate ship arriving to some port. I tried to give it a cinematic framing, It's the beginning of a animation short I was developing (in my mind). Photoshop.It's my first matte painting btw.

I think what you are referring to is when matte painting becomes set extension in cinema. The idea is that the image is not true 3D but more like a pop-out book to allow parallaxing. Hope that helped

realistic painting of non-existing or hard-to-go-and-shoot-places is matte painting, in classical terms. Now a days its much more than that.
