Description Check out this gif of Ampharos with its lights turning on and off!

Oh man, I'm excited I finally get to post this! I had to keep him a secret until my friend's birthday.

So yeah, here's an Ampharos plush which lights up! It stands up about 19 inches tall to the top of the horns, made with sunshine, snow white, and charcoal minky with embroidered smile and eyes. It's got a battery pack which takes 3 AA batteries which can be switched on and off, as well a zipper on the back of the plush which allows the battery pack to be crammed into the stuffing of the plush if you want to hide it. In retrospect I probably should've used a AAA battery holder, but oh well. The battery pack is also removable if you don't care about that stuff and don't want the plush to be weighed down by the battery pack. It's still not particularly huggable though because of the circuitry; this is definitely a display piece and not something you'd hug. (The other Ampharos plush I made is the huggable one!)

The orbs are resin casted pieces. I deliberated a long time about what to do for the orbs until by chance, a person who I work with mentioned that her husband could cast translucent orbs like I wanted, and I think they look fantastic. They don't glow as uniformly as shown in the picture; cameras aren't the best at taking pictures of lights in the dark. It does look quite vibrant in the dark nonetheless.Β

Comes with a free pattern and tutorial for those of you who'd like to make your own Ampharos plush in my style! Check out the links below.

I might be doing commissions in the future, just a heads up. I won't accept commissions for light-up plushies though, I don't trust my soldering skills and they're honestly not as amazing as they sound. They might be cooler if I learn how to integrate the switch directly into the plush though. Maybe...

Yes actually, this tutorial:Β learn.adafruit.com/lets-put-le…

It takes you through the whole process of putting together a circuit with a battery box without any super technical stuff, and you can buy stuff off their site that you'll need. These sorts of circuits are super simple, and learning to solder is also not so bad, just try to be safe with it and such.

eee thank you!

Nah there's really not much you can hurt yourself with, just don't breathe in the fumes and such. And try to use lead free solder if you can, I didn't have an issue working with it, unlike what the article said. Good luck on it though! If you manage to make it I'd love to see it when you're done

Thanks! Yeah, it was rather hard to capture the lighting effect well with the camera, either the plush turned out too dark or the orbs would appear brighter in the picture than in real life.

ReimaHowaido In reply to Diffeomorphism [2015-02-15 19:29:27 +0000 UTC]

And most of the time pictures end up too yellow or such, so really, you did a good job on it~

This guy is so impressive! Β Such a wonderful idea to make him light up! Β That cute little smile is perfect, too. Β I'm sure your friend is thrilled with their gift; they're lucky to have such a nice friend! Β
I can tell a lot of work was put into him, with all the circuitry and stripes. Β Lovely job!

Diffeomorphism In reply to Paleona [2015-02-08 04:31:03 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Indeed my friend was elated, I'm sure he'll take good care of it. Also I must admit I did sort of a hack job on the circuitry There's definitely ways I could've made it nicer, such as hiding the hot glue I used to put the tail orb on, haha. Oh well, looks cool all the same.

Aarux [2015-02-08 03:27:11 +0000 UTC]

Dude, this is amazing! Awesome job, I love the lighter color you used for the stripes. It's a lot less jarring than pure black :v
If you do end up taking commissions, will you announce when beforehand? I would flipping love a plush from you

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Diffeomorphism In reply to Aarux [2015-02-08 04:28:06 +0000 UTC]

I actually used charcoal instead of black just because I didn't want to mark on black fabric, haha. Also there's a lot of inconsistencies between anime/global link/old Sugimori/new Sugimori drawings of Pokemon which is sometimes a pain... Charcoal seemed to do the job.

I was actually thinking of opening up commissions in the future; I'll definitely give some advance notice about commissions. I know I'm always wishy washy about commissions but I seriously intend to do some over the next few months.

Oh man, taking photos is still my least favourite part of the whole process. Yours look great though

Diffeomorphism In reply to sugarstitch [2015-02-08 04:25:02 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, I don't mind photoshooting too much, although that's because me finishing a plush is a big event, haha. My least favorite part is probably just tracing pattern pieces and cutting them out. I'm gonna attribute that to me being crazy impatient.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sugarstitch In reply to Diffeomorphism [2015-02-08 07:59:46 +0000 UTC]

My impatience comes out when I'm stuffing, since I'm really close to seeing how it'll turn out haha. I find colour correcting tedious though, especially since I'm never happy with my photos and am too lazy to get a super sophisticated setup aha.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Diffeomorphism In reply to sugarstitch [2015-02-08 16:03:41 +0000 UTC]

I dunno if you saw my setup but I literally just rigged together some PVC pipes and hung a piece of fabric over it. And then I put it on a floor and used some books to level my camera. Not exactly what you'd call sophisticated Then again I'm not even a professional so whatever. I must admit I'm rather lazy with color correcting; most of the time I'll just hit auto-color and call it a day, haha.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sugarstitch In reply to Diffeomorphism [2015-02-09 07:17:36 +0000 UTC]

Fair enough haha. I think the issue with me is I just use my phone camera. It's not terrible quality, but also not amazing aha. I spend way too much time mucking around with colour correcting >-<
