Description Created for 'tears' contest; I challenged myself by doing it on very light (white fur) background, and in a fairly monochromatic setting; due to positioning of bears, I had to use multiple layers of tears; I was also trying to give a 'frozen' tear look, a bit.

EDIT: I am entering this deviation into 'The Love of Nature' Contest at the Group

More about these endangered bears: VitalGround factoids and Polar Bears Int'l climate change effects on polar bears (trending downward even since 2005) along with
the Sierra Club's arctic drilling (googleMaps) map and a change.org petition for Pres. Obama, who campaigned (as did McCain) on not drilling in ANWR, only needs 500 more signatures!

Conserving fossil fuels helps us all, and your bottom line.

Edit2: In the first contest, in the advanced group, first place! along with these two other very fine works:

Oh wow this is an awesome piece! I love the message you are sending with it and the tears on the polar bears make me want to hug them! They'd probably eat me if I tried though. Would you mind if I featured it in my group ?

Honored for asking; I clicked yes. However not very typical for fantasy?

Very good picture, I love the concept and I think it's well executed. The tears just look frozen, as you meant they will. Anyway, just because they ask us to be a little critic, I must say that the quality of the background "station" picture doesn't match very well with the whole image. I like the shadow of the standing bear on the right, but I think that the left bear's one it's a little too big. I hope you will find this helpful. Good luck in the contest,

Beautiful and emotional piece. How appropriate to use tears in the polar bears' eyes...frozen! I love this. The depth is outstanding! It is a beautiful tribute to the bears and would make a great poster for the cause.

A very emotional and dramatic peice. It is sad that their world is changing for the worse, and these are beautiful bears.

The frozen tears look wonderful. A bit on the large size but they do look good on the bears, so ignore the size reference

digimagicnb In reply to MaureenOlder [2011-02-13 10:47:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. It is sad for the bears, but we can still change the situation. As to tear size, they are a bit big, but that's partially because they are bears, so they need bear-size tears and partly because they're frozen, and so build up, like an icicle, but mostly because I didn't do a portrait for the piece and wanted them seen per the assignment, like they are in everyone else's portraits.

MaureenOlder In reply to digimagicnb [2011-02-13 11:04:19 +0000 UTC]

yes people do tend to lean towards a portrait.

'bear size tears' I like that.

They convey the emotion of this peice well.

Thanks very much. In this case, I think the background stock did a lot of the heavy lifting. However, the blur tool is your friend when painting.

I have never really used the blur tool in my pieces I just try and get everything as perfect as I can. I guess I'll have to try and use it to see what results it will give me, so thanks for the tip!

digimagicnb In reply to orionshope [2011-02-21 03:37:21 +0000 UTC]

It's not one I used a lot, until recently; also smudge, sometimes either at about 50-70%. Reading some of the tuts by top manipulators, they all recommend it, especially for skin and hair. Just another tool to use in your arsenal

orionshope In reply to digimagicnb [2011-02-21 15:17:30 +0000 UTC]

I can't seem to get the painted look and very sharp detail that more experienced Deviants are achieveing, I only have the basics and no clue as how to get better. But it was suggested I do some youtube tutorials and that would help me grow and improve.
