Description Created for 'tears' contest; I challenged myself by doing it on very light (white fur) background, and in a fairly monochromatic setting; due to positioning of bears, I had to use multiple layers of tears; I was also trying to give a 'frozen' tear look, a bit.

EDIT: I am entering this deviation into 'The Love of Nature' Contest at the Group

More about these endangered bears: VitalGround factoids and Polar Bears Int'l climate change effects on polar bears (trending downward even since 2005) along with
the Sierra Club's arctic drilling (googleMaps) map and a change.org petition for Pres. Obama, who campaigned (as did McCain) on not drilling in ANWR, only needs 500 more signatures!

Conserving fossil fuels helps us all, and your bottom line.

Edit2: In the first contest, in the advanced group, first place! along with these two other very fine works:

This is such a creative idea! The message you are sending is powerful and much needed, and the different elements you added all have meaning and impact the image as a whole. The "ice tears" are great, though they seem to be slightly over-sized (though if you made them much smaller, they'd probably go left unnoticed). The polar bear on the right does look a bit like a "sticker", but I think if you just blended its feet with the background a bit more, it wouldn't stick out as much.

i want to say welcome my dear to your first contest here. this is a learning group and i see you already have had some great critiques. so i guess this is going to be mine. please remember we are all here to learn and improve on our skills to help you become the best at manipulations.
the first thing i see is this wonderful background i have always loved it and maybe someday i will use it too. your story is amazingly wonderful it really makes one think about the plight of our poles. ok now to the technical. right off the oil rig is blurry in compared to the background closest to it. to possible fix that would be to take your rectangular marquee tool with a pixel at about 20 on the background layer draw a rectangle around the back portion closest to the oil rig. then go to filter-blur-gaussian blur, using the leaver slid till it matches. the shadow under the larger bear needs to be darker under the feet. when the picture is downloaded you will be able to see that better. i'm not sure about the shadow on the smaller bear. it looks like the shadow is coming from something floating above the small bear. see how it is on the neck as well as on the water. if you erase the part that is on the neck it will look like the bear is making the shadow. the main object to this composition is the tears. i love how you decided to make them look like ice but the only problem is that everything else is melted. so the tears should look wet. when i look at the tears in compared to how large the heads are i believe the tears are to large. your color match is great they really blend well. your cut-out is wonderful there are no halos. i really enjoy this piece very very much

Thanks very much...I was aware of the rig and shadows, especially the littler bear's, but had some layer mixups at some points and had already merged some layers together, before I realized it. I agree about that background. Gorgeous. Thanks for the crit.

The tears look awesomely icey I'm not big on the whole global warming thing, I feel that's it's mostly hype and politics than anything else. However this is still a wonderful piece of artwork for the contest.

I just saw tonight that a city in Virginia is already dealing with neighborhoods being flooded by the rising ocean. They talked to a couple of retirees who's house was flooded 4 times in 5 years, and they replaced all their appliances, water heaters, ducts, etc., multiple times. Apparently this city is also where "the US Navy operates the largest naval base in the world" there and the navy has "to spend tens of millions of dollars just to shore up their piers", around minute 4:30 [link]

Here's a link to the NY Times article they referred to in the video: [link]

Everything! is political, and it may be hyped, but that doesn't mean it's not true.

Well, I studied hydrogeochemistry since the 80's, and have worked with the data consistently since then (what got me into computer graphics in the first place, actually, was modelling 3d groundwater pollution plumes; my dad was a scientist, and I was pushed into the field, but always had a soft spot for art, even making my own 'studio' in the basement as a child; when the dot-com era came along, I jumped into further studies in digital photog, alongside working at the USGS). The thing that politicized it, I believe, was that Reagan, while saying he was going to cut taxes, raised them, and so he needed to cut funding somewhere, and pure science R&D, after high $ investments, and the innovations that went with them, in the 70's, were cut, and they needed 'reasons' to make those cuts beyond pure greed; at the same time, 'born-again' xian fundie-ism arose and went hand-in-hand with scientific illiteracy increases. But don't let my thoughts and experience sway you...just the logic should:

you know that when you burn things, particulates accumulate, and these, in aggregate, over a century or so, will affect the liquid-gas chemical cycles and load of the planet. Climates have always changed, and fossil fuel burning particulates and gases just complicate
