Oh now you mentioned it, yeah it's all make sense. In order to fly, you need a proportional wings to carry heavy body, but then what happened in the show, the wings are too small, so it left a mystery that the answer is magic itself. About the earth ponies... I don't really know... But then we can specify that there are 3 magics in equestria. Unicorn, Pegasus and earth pony.

When you see Rainbow Dash in the episode, She actually connected the cable and the light turned on. It's not the twilight that use her magic nor other unicorn and magical ponies.
