Description I have Manga Studio 5/Clip Studio Paint for quite some time now but, I’m shame to admit that I’ve never used it to create a finished work or to learn it properly. It has the best inking tools that I have tried and, I understand why it is so popular with inking comic/manga creators. But, ‘out of the box’ their other brushes like the oils aren’t so well tuned. And, it’s a shame, because the brush engine is quite powerful to create some good brushes.

With this piece I tried to achieve too many things, all at the same time. I tried to learn the program, customize my workspace to my liking and, create my own custom oil brushes set. It is not hard to switch to Manga Studio 5/Clip Studio Paint if you’re a Photoshop, Krita, or other digital painting program user. There is plenty help online, with video tutorials, tips, guides etc. (The chapter of perspective rulers I haven’t figured it out well yet).

I worked with an unorthodox way to create these avocados. Without planning for a subject, I randomly pick up the Day 21 from the 30 Day Palette Challenge magicalzombie.deviantart.com/a… just to learn how to create a custom palette set in MS5/Clip Studio Paint. I started to draw avocados just because I had green in my colour palette. I added the huge ladybug because it was red and, I wanted to make use of the red/orange colours I had available in the limited colour palette. The whole composition was created little by little this way.

I’m always saying that if you want to achieve the natural media look digitally, you must work with a process that you would have followed if you would have been working with the natural media. I didn’t do that with this piece. I was making my custom oil brushes ‘on the fly’, trying them out, making adjustments etc. In a few words, I worked very sloppy but, usually I like to plan my steps ahead. I’m pleased with my custom oil bushes set for a first try.

I’m all in with colour palette challenges and, achieving a traditional media look digitally. Even though this work of mine, which is highly experimental doesn’t show it too well, I believe that it is possible to achieve something more of a natural media feel brushes with MS5/Clip Studio Paint. If you’ll play with the brush settings you can create some natural media look brushes that you could be pleased with.

Note: This huge ladybug is not a hyperrealism interpretation of mine; well, it started that way to be honest. There’re huge ladybugs beetles species long as 10+ cm. I tried to draw freely the Anatis Mali specie, the Eye-spotted Lady Beetle.

I think this is amazing! Especially since you were doing a lot of experimenting all at once. To me, it comes pretty close to looking traditional, especially since you limited your color palette.

There are seriously ladybugs that get that big...?! I want one!

I agree that if you put enough effort in, a digital painting can look like a traditional one.

You are very good at those challenges- it's amazing~~
And I like that you put the Eye-spotted Lady Beetle there- it made the drawing even more interesting :]

I’m pleased with this drawing for a first try with MS5/Clip Studio Paint. The subject for this limited colour palette challenge was quite unexpected even to me but, I like how it turned out. Thank you for your cheerful comment.  Happy Easter!
