Description
This little fella was on the news worldwide this winter and, has stolen many hearts with its cuteness. It happened in Guatemala, when a young sloth tried to cross a road but, then got trapped in the middle of it. Transport officials in Ecuador found this long-haired sloth clinging to a traffic barrier for dear life. I guess, it was the only thing that assimilated something of a tree trunk for the poor creature to hold on. The cute sloth has been returned safe and, well to its habitat. This cute sloth was my inspiration for this piece and, an opportunity to create something for a second time with Manga Studio 5/Clip Studio Paint and, my custom oil brushes. I’m always saying that if you want to achieve a traditional media look digitally, you must work with a limited color palette, if possible sample sets of the actual media you’re trying to imitate. So, I color pick Van Gogh Artists Oil Paints set of 66 pigments. But, it didn’t work out that well. The colors didn’t blend that well together because of the standard RGB model blending that used by most programs. It could have worked out with few colors and, here a palette mixer tray option would have been helpful. 66 real oil colors are plenty to depict the whole gamma of the rainbow. But, with my brushes I felt as if I was working with limited colored pencils. Somehow it felt as mixing directly the pure colors on canvas technique of the real oils. It was an experimental process so, I worked with this 66 oils colors set. For color accuracy, it would have been better if I worked with the color wheel and, picking the colors I needed that way. But, anyway…
I hope, I have achieved something of a traditional oil media feel with my little bradypus. I know my custom oil brushes for MS5/Clip Studio Paint need much more fine-tuning and, I have to develop a technique that would work well. For now, one ‘trick’ I use for a more traditional media look is not to overwork my pieces. I would have worked and, cleaned up this piece, put much more fine details and polished it, if I wasn’t going for a natural media feel. But, I’m pleased how it turned out, for it being a second try piece.

Poor little thing! I'm glad the little sloth got out of that rough situation safely. If it's any consolation to your color mixing problems, colors don't actually matter! Hah, I mean they kind of do in you're trying to get a certain mood or emotion across... but usually no matter what colors you use, as long as your values are correct it works out ok in the end! I would say that turned out to be true of this painting

Superb work. And most poignant message regarding the negative impact us humans are having on our fellow travellers of this world. Cheers.

You were successful in achieving the traditional feel.
With all the animals you paint you manage to give the viewer instant connection.
There is optimism, the viewer not only senses he knows he is being rescued.
But it is us the viewer who is rescuing him. That is a powerful thing to be able to capture.

This drawing has so much life to it! Great idea writing "help" on the traffic barrier- it gave the drawing a deep meaning.
I am happy the sloth is back in it's natural habitat now ^^

Although I am not a fan of sloths, I must say you nailed the cute face and the look in general of the piece is absolutely beautiful.
