You see, there's this woman who lives across from us ... - Mabel "Mama" Nelson, of course.  In my original and second drafts for this episode both Mama and her husband Rufus would have also been present, and it would have been Mama who jumped on Carlton for being an "Uncle Tom" (go look it up).  There's another even more derogatory term for what Carlton represents that I heard more than a few times during my youth in the American Deep South, but I won't repeat it here (go look it up if you're curious).  Carlton would have in turn lit into her just as hard but in a very refined and dignified manner, forcing Rufus to rein her in, and Mama would have eventually apologized.  I decided to soften this for the final version, especially after deciding that Mama wouldn't actually be present but might hear about Carlton later from Larry and Brandy.  I think this came across better in the final version above, but that's my opinion.  And if you don't think that doesn't happen, there are those of us who have actually personally witnessed such encounters taking place - those from my early drafts, that is.

Being a proper butler is more than just wearing the outfit.  Clothes do not make the man (or woman) in this case.  Rather than me tell you about it, I invite you to do a Internet search on stereotypical English type butlers in the modern world.  You'll be surprised at what it takes to become one and what a good one can earn in the rarefied upper-crust world in which they normally operate.  Not just anybody can become a good English type butler, no more than just anybody can become a good footballer or pop star or actor or whatever.  You can take it from there.

Learning how to speak "the Queen's English" isn't a requirement of the job; however, Carlton wanted to learn it anyway to make it absolutely clear to anyone around him what he IS without having to give any long-winded explanations.  It makes him stand out from the crowd, because most of us immediately associate a certain mental perception with a butler speaking in a proper refined British accent.  In other words, he went the extra mile for his chosen profession.  Just chew on that one for a while.
