Codenamed Charlie by NATO, the Project 670 Skat class was a group of 17 nuclear-powered guided missile submarines (SSGN) produced in two distinct build groups, NATO designations Charlie I and Charlie II, which entered service with the Soviet Navy starting in November of 1967.  They were different from ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) in that they carried anti-ship cruise missiles as their primary armament.  They also carried torpedoes both for self-defense and to have as an option a more traditional fallback hunter-killer role, and they could even be refitted for a limited minelaying capability.  The first 11 comprised the Charlie I group, while the last 7 comprised the Charlie II group (service entry date 1972).  The biggest visual difference between the two was that Charlie II was eight meters longer at the bow in order to add room for the electronics and control systems necessary for handling the SS-N-22 Sunburn anti-ship missile.  Charlie I had entered service armed with the SS-N-7 Starbright anti-ship missile, as it was the best available at the time.  Charlie was the first SSGN as such to serve with the Soviet Navy and was chosen as a cheaper alternative to putting the cost-prohibitive one-off Papa class into full production, althouh it drew part of its design inspiration from it.  These were quite successful on the whole and it was long expected that there would eventually be a Charlie III group; however, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War in 1991 effectively nixed that prospect.  All Charlies were taken out of service by the successor Russian Federation in the early 1990s and were subsequently scrapped.  To find out more about the Soviet Charlie class submarine, follow the links below:

This is a straight port of the original models with no changes by me.  Archive includes models for both Charlie I and Charlie II.

This is not my model.  All I did was port and adapt it for use with the common OBJ model format.  Please credit Killerfish Games for the original.  You do not have to credit me for my part.

For non-profit, non-commercial use only.

TRIVIA - The Soviet Navy leased the Charlie I class boat K-43 to India from 1988 to 1991, to help the Indians in gaining experience with operating a modern nuclear submarine.  She was renamed INS Chakra during this time.
