NEW FOR 2022!

Ported to OBJ from the model created by jhapprich for Silent Hunter 4 (SH4) by Ubisoft.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

Back in 1958 and on a direct order from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, the engineers of the Soviet Navy undertook the development of a new type of military submarine that would go beyond the conventional perceptions of the time.  Originally known as K-162 and later as K-222, code named Anchar in Russian and Papa by NATO, it wound up being the lone Soviet submarine of its type ever built.  It represented a radical departure from the way the Soviets had been building submarines.  It was the first submarine built with an all-titanium hull, which was stronger and lighter than a steel hull and thus permitted greater diving depths, as well as being more resistant to corrosion.  The hull form itself was also different, utilizing a flattened elongated teardrop shape that would set a new standard for Soviet submarine design.  Its twin skeg screws (anticipating those of the later Typhoon) were driven by an experimental lead-bismuth (LBE) nuclear reactor that held the promise of greater efficiency and being less susceptible to damage or even meltdown in the event of coolant loss.  Coupled with its two auxiliary standard nuclear reactors and its titanium hull, Papa still holds the world record for being the fastest submarine in history.  It had a proven top speed of 51 mph underwater (!!!!!) and a normal cruising speed of 44 mph (!!!).  She also had a reported rated diving depth of 400 meters (just over 1300 feet), which was another benefit of her all-titanium hull.  All of this came at a very high price.  Papa was very expensive to build and maintain, earning the nickname of the "Golden Fish" in Soviet naval circles, and because of that she was the only one ever built.  She was also one of the noisiest boats that the Soviet Navy ever fielded, with her acoustic signature being likened to that of a large tractor-trailer rig driving past you only a few feet away.  She also proved troublesome to operate, with her advanced technology being so ahead of its time that has been described as "delicate."  Nonetheless Papa served until 1988, when she was placed in reserve at Severodvinsk.  She was formally decommissioned in 1999 and was eventually scrapped in 2010.  Papa's legacy remains, however, with many of the pioneering naval technologies first attempted or successfully carried out with Papa carried over in part or in whole to later Soviet and Russian nuclear submarine classes, and both the later Alfa and Sierra class Soviet nuclear fleet boats owed a lot of their subsequent success to Papa, their pioneering predecessor.  To find out more about the groundbreaking Papa class submarine of the Cold War era Soviet Navy, follow the links below:

This is a straight port with no changes by me.

While I am no longer making my OBJ ports of Silent Hunter series models available for public download, you can get this yourself in one of two ways.  You can extract it piecemeal from the game data using the free SKWAS/s3ditor model utility and rebuild it in your preferred 3D modeling software, or you can rip it directly from the game after installing any necessary mods or mod packs noted above using any good 3D model ripper (3D Ripper DX or NinjaRipper recommended).

This model is currently a members-only exclusive at the SubSim forums.  3D models of Papa are rather hard to find given its one-off nature, especially free 3D models, so good luck hunting.  For those of you who can't find one, and if you have the 3D modeling skill, you can probably kitbash together a reasonable Papa facsimile using parts from Oscar, Typhoon, and perhaps even Mike if you can find that one.  Again, good luck.
