The bit about Larry imagining himself in a plane crash after he hears of Brandy's boyfriend was inspired by a somewhat similar scene in Rumiko Takahashi's Maison Ikkoku. Godai, the young male protagonist, is always being picked on by his rowdy neighbors -- especially after the attractive (and single!) Kyoko Otonashi takes over as their apartment building's new manager. Of course, Godai instantly gets the hots for her, and his neighbors now have something new to pick on him about. One of the nastier things they do to poor Godai is to temporarily convince Kyoko that he's a pervert. Once that happens, Godai imagines himself being pounded into the ground by oversized baby chicks (Kyoko's apron has a baby chick motif) -- so great is his despair at what the unsuspecting Kyoko now thinks of him. XD
