These were the first landing ship dock (LSD) type naval vessels built for the British Royal Navy after the Cold War, designed to support amphibious assault operations overseas.  The class name comes from all ships in the class being named after large Commonwealth bays.  All were based on the Schiede Enforcer design.  Four were ordered during the early 2000s for the British Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) as replacements for the older Cold War era Round Table series, two each from different shipbuilders but built to the same design in order to speed construction.  That was not fated to be, as the Bay program suffered from construction delays, massive cost overruns, and a budgetary crisis in HM government that at one point threatened the cancellation of the entire class.  All four were eventually built and entered service starting in 2006 and all have performed admirably.  All the same financial issues continue to beset their use (chiefly operating costs), and class member Largs Bay was eventually sold to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) to help offset this.  They have renamed it HMAS Choules in their service.  All four Bay class LSDs (Lyme Bay, Mounts Bay, Cardigan Bay, Choules [ex-Largs Bay]) remain in active Commenwealth naval service as I write this (summer 2021).  To find out more about the British Bay class LSDs of the early 21st century, follow the link below:

This is a straight port with no changes by me.
