Dark Star remains to this day one of the funniest sci-films you'll ever see, and is widely regarded as one of the all-time classic great sci-fi comedies.  To boil its plot down to its basics, it's about the crew of a starship, the Dark Star, who are on an extended duration mission blowing up planets unsuitable for colonization and who have been out in space on a rather small starship with only what's on board and each other for company for waaaaaaaaaaay too long.  Think about it.  Five guys - no, make that three, the captain is almost dead in a freezer below decks and one of them spends just about all his time up in the observation dome just staring at the stars - and with all of them slowly going mad from isolation psychosis in their own way because they've been out in space for years, headquarters refuses to recall them for budget reasons, everything on the ship is old or starting to break down (or both), and they wind up usually getting the hell on each other's nerves along the way in their slow but steady slide into ... well, why spoil the ending? (chuckle)  This was the first feature film of John Carpenter, who would go on to make SO many more good movies; and it was also the first feather in the hat for Dan O'Bannon (Alien), who actually appears in the movie as the hilarious Sgt. Pinback.  Dark Star would inspire a lot of other folks in various ways and there's lots of references to it in later sci-fi media (more than one in the Star Trek franchise, for example).  If you haven't seen it yet, you should ... and be prepared to laugh a lot before it's done.  XD

Jay Thurman's take on Dark Star's title spacecraft is wonderfully done, and it ports quite easily into other CG formats by most of the methods available for porting SketchUp models.  I ported it myself years ago and I think others have since.  The only thing he got wrong was the font for the lettering on the hull (it should be Eurostile or Microstyle Extended), but that can be fixed on your end and the rest of his wonderful model is pretty much spot-on.  No interior, sadly, but the movie sets were fairly simple and I'm sure there's suitable substitutes out there if you don't feel like recreating your own.

So ... do you dare to send you favorite characters on an extended tour of duty aboard the Dark Star?  Theirs may not end the same way as did that of the original ship and crew, but I'm willing to be it's going to be a very interesting "close quarters" experience all the same ... provided it goes on for long enough, that is.  XD
