Description

An original 3D CG model by me using parts from Captain Mojo's Baton Rouge class STL model and both the Baton Rouge and TOS Detroyat models by Dave Metlesits.  Based on the "as approved" Baton Rouge era schematic by me as first published in my fanon Federation Spaceflight Chronology (FSC) years ago.  Based on the original Detroyat design by Mike Morisette as published in his fanon Detroyat Class Blueprints back in the days of classic Trek fandom.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

As I've noted with the TOS entry on Detroyat and in my own Federation Spaceflight Chronology (FSC), Detroyat's origins lie at the end of the Baton Rouge generation.  It was originally approved for construction as the very last of the last Baton Rouge generation starship classes, developed in part to address the failings of the Constant Warwick class light cruiser (Neale Davison) but retooled during its development into a heavy destroyer in response to growing tensions with the Klingon Empire.  It was very controversial even in this embryonic form, and fortunately for everyone the arrival of the Class I generation starship designs (SFTM, et al) gave Starfleet the excuse it needed to put a hold on Detroyat construction and have it converted to the superior Class I spec before they were finished.  Those already under construction were converted in the yard and finished in the later Class I form that all of you know and love, while all subsequent Detroyats were built to the Class I standard from the keel up.

The only other model that's been done up until now of Detroyat that attempted to show it in its original Baton Rouge generation form was by I_MUDD, and his was shall we say "unique."  He definitely put his own style and sense of his own view of the pre-TOS era into it, which for me ruined it but still made it a very unique looking model all the same.  Recently I found the free time to put together a more accurate quick-and-dirty 3D model using the various pre-TOS Feddie starship parts I now have, and needless to say I like this version far more than I did I_MUDD's.  It's made as a segmented model so I can "upgrade" it as needed for my own various Trek efforts, and I show it to you in two forms in the above preview piccy.  The one on top is "as launched" and sticks strictly to my original FSC schematic for the Baton Rouge era configuration of Detroyat, save for the use of the alternate Gearing type simplified primary hull per the original Mike Morisette blueprints (same as Titan and Valkyr BTW, see separate entries for both), instead of the early Chiokis type used for most of the rest of the Baton Rouge generation.  The lower shows Detroyat launching with Valley Forge battlecruiser type warp engines, for those of you who include Masao Okazaki's Valley Forge in your take on the Baton Rouge generation (as did Neale back at the time).  I personally feel that Detroyat would have launched with these instead had the Class I era not come along and it had been finished as a Baton Rouge era starship, given both its lateness in approval and that of Valley Forge, but that's just me.  Pick which one works for you or come up with your own interpretation ... as I_MUDD definitely did (wink) and others probably have too.  Hey, whatever works for you.  Trek is a multiverse after all.

Mike Morisette's Detroyat in all forms, including this one, is and remains fanon until or unless the Franchise says otherwise.

Live long and prosper.

ASIDE - The best way to keep the various Detroyat configurations straight is like this.  Mr. Morisette's original blueprints represent Detroyat "as conceived," this Baton Rouge era take represents Detroyat "as approved" for construction, and the popular TOS era fanon take represents Detroyat "as launched" -- given that it was swapped over to the later and better Class I program while the first Detroyats were still under construction.  Make sense now?  XD
