Description

Ported to OBJ and given an initial texture job by me from the original STL model format recreation by Tyrel Lohr.  Custom textures originally created by Dave "First Fleet" Metlesits for use with his own various Trek CG fan efforts.  Based on the original design as created by Forest Brown and Dana Knutson for FASA Corporation's various Franchise licensed Trek gaming efforts back in the day.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  You can download Mr. Lohr's original model at the link below but be warned!  STL models are made for use with 3D printers and rarely if ever come with textures because of that, as the end user is expected to hand paint the 3D printed model.  If you want this model in textured form like you see above (or hopefully better, chuckle) then you're going to have to do the job yourself, just as I did.  Anyway, here's that link:

Revastal (Rh. "free flight") was one of the oldest starship classes still in service with the Romulan Space Navy (RSN) at the start of the TOS/TAS era.  Its origins lie in the pre-TOS era, after the end of the Romulan War and after the Romulan Star Empire had finally rebounded from losing that war.  It was a contemporary of such noted post-Romulan War starship classes as Cracker and Capsize (see separate entries).  The simplest way to describe Revastal would be as their scout or explorer class contemporary, and per the original FASA gaming data "... was once in the forefront of early coreward and spinward [Empire] advances, accounting for a reported 60% of the contacts made with new civilizations."  That's pretty good for what FASA expert Brad R. Torgerson has deemed "a miserable combat piece," and to be frank it is, but that's because Revastal wasn't designed as a warship.  It's best to think of it as the pre-TOS predecessor to the later Hunter class explorer (see separate entry), and once you both make that adjustment and place Revastal in its proper time then a lot of things about it suddenly start making sense.  The Romulans apparently found it very useful in this time frame despite its "miserable" combat characteristics, because there were four production blocks made or about 80 or so all told (original FASA numbers adjusted, wink).  They also kept it upgraded as much as possible, although as the end of the pre-TOS era and the beginning of the TOS/TAS era approached it was becoming clear that Revastal had outlived its original purpose.  Consequently almost all surviving members of the class were converted into light transports and eventually sold off into the Romulan civilian sector as the era continued, and that is where examples of aged Revastals are best found during the TOS/TAS era (say, being used by Romulan civilian traders in the Triangle region or the like).  There were a few that were retained "for private research" per the original FASA notes (read in what you will there).  They also state that the fourth and final major Revastal production block, which was of the Type 11 iteration of the original design, was the best and sported "an impressive array of weapons and an upgraded shield system."  Mr. Torgerson obviously wasn't impressed, and as for CG model recreator Tyrel Lohr he judged its combat potential as "... somewhere between 'meh' and LOL (laugh out loud)" -- however, he also says in his original writeup "I've long been fond of this design [Revastal].  It fits the TOS Romulan aesthetic wonderfully ...."  Of course, what you do with this in your own threads of the Trek multiverse or even if you use it at all is strictly up to you.

Right now this is the only Revastal CG model out there, and let me tell you it is a bitch to texture properly given the way it's made.  This is one I wish Captain Mojo or somebody else would remake in a more texture-friendly form.  Then again Mr. Lohr didn't make his model for texturing, so let's be fair to him on that point.  I'm just glad we finally got a CG model of Revastal period, and as you can see I was able after a lot of effort to splash some initial textures on it and take a pretty picture for all of you.  Perhaps one of you will do a lot better once you get his model and play with it yourselves.  Be my guest -- and his too.

This is semi-canon, as it comes from a Franchise licensed work (FASA Romulan Ship Recognition Manual)

Sab khut hafeth, frazhannempal was qailefeth.

ASIDE - What you see above is the TOS/TAS era form of Revastal, i.e. the light civilian transport form with all upgrades and TOS/TAS era Romulan warp engines, because that's the only one FASA illustrated and consequently the only one so far of which we have a CG model.  Anybody want to take on retrograding Revastal into a proper pre-TOS era form, either Masao or NuTrek style?  XD
