There are two more stops on the Federation space battleship road after the linear warp Ares design study and before you get to the massive and impressive Yamato at the end of the 23rd century.  These can be taken in any order depending on what you're looking at, so I'll start with the one that was actually produced as the Federation's very first class of space battleships.  That would be the late linear warp era Missouri class, named after the famed Terran aquatic battleship of the World War II era Iowa class.  Missouri came from a different line of design thought than Yamato as you can see above, and while one of the largest Starfleet vessels of the era had a very tucked-in hull form.  This was to both maximize internal volume and also minimize the amount of damage she would have to take in any fight, which is something you want in a space battleship, and Missouri compared favorably with selected larger Gorn capital ships of the angular design school (FASA) in this regard.  Also and like any real space battleship she carried an enormous amount of weaponry, including being the first Federation starship class to mount a (single) starbase class heavy assault phaser.  All of this weaponry plus the enormous energy cost required to protect such a big hull (even a tucked-in one like hers) meant that she had both custom warp engines (extensively modified from those designed for the Excelsior project, see separate entry) and a large set of auxiliary power fusion reactors (or APRs in SFB gaming slang) buried deep within her hull for the extra juice she needed for everything.  These were independent of both her warp and impulse engine power grids and thus also served as an alternate power source in the event of an emergency.  Despite all of this juice she was slow and not very maneuverable (she massed a lot, of course), but these were only secondary concerns when your main task, as it was with Starfleet at the time, was to have something ready and in the field to counter the new Klingon space battleships that they knew were coming, as they eventually did.  Missouri may have been one of the slowest and ugliest Federation starship classes to enter Starfleet service in the TMP era, but she was also one of the most respected.  Her near-legendary ability to take one helluva pounding while giving as good as she got earned the praise of even the Klingons ... and that was high praise indeed in the TMP era.

This is semi-canon, as it comes from a Franchise licensed video game.

Live long and prosper.

TRIVIA - The Missouri class were known affectionately both to their crews and their many fans both inside and out of Federation space as the BUFFs.  This was an acronym borrowed from an old Terran 20th and 21st century jet bomber and stood for big ugly fat f-x-ker, with the last word commonly changed to fellow or the like to be polite.  Missouri was big, ugly, and fat, but she was one f-x-ker of a space warship, as was and still is so commonly expressed.  You know, as in "We're gonna BUFF 'em out.  Call Missouri!"  XD
