Description

Ported to OBJ from the upgraded model created by Wicked Zombie for the Starfleet Command (SFC) series of video games. Based on the original Okinawa design by Taldren Studios for the video game Klingon Academy (KA), also by Activision, and subsequently appearing in many games in the SFC series. Okinawa was the last frigate class of any type or size built for the Federation Starfleet during the TMP era. Depending on which source you consult it was either the successor to the TOS era Burke class small frigate of the SFB gaming continuity or was a TMP era upgraded version of her original TOS era form per the various related Star Trek comics. I go the Burke successor route in my own Federation Fleet Review (FFR), bringing the first of these into service late in the TMP era only a few years before the Praxis Event (STIV) and the end of the TMP era. Six were initially ordered and entered service, with class ship USS Okinawa lost with all hands on a secret mission in the former Organian Treaty Zone only a year after she had been commissioned. Despite Okinawa's loss Starfleet was so pleased with overall class performance that it won approval for six more and was seeking approval for a third production block when the disarmament provisos of the Khitomer Accords (STVI) effectively nixed that at the time. It was later revived during the post-TMP era given Starfleet's need at that time to keep its fleet at modern levels, and eventually "over a hundred" were built according to some fannish sources before the Okinawa program finally wound down. With numbers like those, it is not surprising that many made it into the TNG/DS9/VOY era, although serving in reduced or auxiliary roles due to their age but being refitted and upgraded from time to time to keep them as contemporary as possible given their age. I have no data regarding the ultimate end of the class.
