Description

Ported to OBJ from the fan-created model made for the Starfleet Command (SFC) series of video games.  Based on the original design created by Forest Brown and Dana Knutson for FASA Corporation's various Franchise licensed Trek gaming products back in the day.  CG model by Terradyhne.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  SketchUp CG artist JAFisher has his own excellent Thufir recreation that you can download for free over at Google's 3D Warehouse, although it's far higher poly than this one and you'll have to port it yourself to other 3D model formats (download as Collada DAE and use ModelConverterX if your 3D software doesn't support the SKP model format).  Here's the link:

Thufir was a TMP era Starfleet heavy destroyer class that was built to meet the specific needs and design preferences of its Andorian contingent.  It shared the same similar overall configuration as the Lor'vela and Lenthal classes but was fitted with two warp engines in a paired side-by-side arrangement like Lenthal, instead of the single engine that had been fitted to the older Lor'Vela.  Thufir also represented a return to Lor'vela's shorter hull form, as the warp performance gains expected with Lenthal did not materialize and it was instead plagued with greater warp field instability issues than the Andorians desired.  Starfleet proper did not use Thufir and never had any of its own, as it considered the design unsafe given its deliberately unstable warp field (to increase maneuverability in combat); however, the Andorians loved it and were quite proud of it.  Thufir would go on to become the backbone heavy destroyer class during the TMP era for the so-called "Blue Fleet," which had been in existence since before the Romulan War and had always proven itself as one of Starfleet's most combat capable auxiliary divisions.

This is semi-canon, as it comes from the old FASA gaming continuity.

Live long and prosper.

TRIVIA - Many fans hold that the Thufir class was named for the fictional character of Thufir Hawat, the aged mentat of House Atredies, as ably portrayed by the late Freddie Jones in the David Lynch feature film version of Frank Herbert's Dune.  It came out before FASA released its data on Baker, so it's a reasonable theory although I'm not sure if it's ever been confirmed.
