Description

Ported to OBJ from the model created by Taldren Studios for the Starfleet Command series.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

NOTICE - This is called the King Cobra class in the game.  I have renamed it to avoid confusion with another older Gorn starship class.  Varanus salvator is the Latin or scientific name for the Asian water monitor giant lizard.  If you prefer the original name from the game then just substitute King Cobra everywhere I use Salvator in the writeup below.

Salvator (Starfleet Intelligence code name, good luck pronouncing the Gorn original) was the late post-TMP era follow-on to the Gorn's higly regarded TMP era Euromastyx class heavy cruiser.  It was a contemporary of the Federation's Ambassador class (see separate entry) although it preceded it into service by a number of years (how many depends on Trek multiverse thread consulted).  It was essentially a built-up Euromastyx with newer post-TMP era engines and systems, as well as significant hull extensions or add-on sections that gave plenty of room for extra weaponry as well as more "stuff," to put it simply (grin).  Maneuverability was comparable to Euromastyx despite the extra mass of the new hull add-ons due to Salvator's newer and more powerful warp engines.  Armament was also comparable save for several extra phaser-I mounts as well as two more Gorn plasma torpedo systems than its predecessor (four more in some multiverse threads, type and power of the extra systems vary with thread consulted).

The key thing that set Salvator apart from the earlier Euromastyx despite their visual and other similarities and their differences in technology level (post-TMP versus TMP era) was in their small craft complement.  Borrowing a page from other major spacefaring powers, Salvator was the first Gorn heavy cruiser class to carry a half-squadron (6 units) of small combat craft as standard.  These were usually all Gorn heavy fighters - Vipers at first, but later Pythons once those became available (see separate entries on both).  It was an experiment of sorts for the Gorn in having the same "small craft as offensive enhancers" combat capability for Salvator as similar types fielded by those other major powers, but you'll have to consult other sources to see how it ultimately turned out.  Three Gorn small combat craft were carried in each of its dual hangar bays, one in each major hull section port and starboard, along with anywhere from one to three more small craft of other types per bay (number dependent on type and size).

Salvator was one of the last members of the Gorn "New Type" generation of starship classes that began to be built shortly before the end of the TOS/TAS era and lasted all the way to the late post-TMP era.  They went in a different design direction after that (STO), but for what that later effort produced you'll have to consult the TNG/DS9/VOY era Gorn sub-gallery here at Mandel's ... once I find the time to start filling it, that is.  XD

Salvator was still in Gorn Hegemony fleet service in numbers as the post-TMP era rolled over into the TNG/DS9/VOY era.  It remained in service as late as the early years of the post-Dominion War period if I'm interpreting the game data correctly.  That's all I've got on this.  For more you'll either have to go to the game or consult fanon sources.

This is semi-canon, as it was created for a Franchise-licensed video game.
