Ported to OBJ from the fan created model made for the Starfleet Command (SFC) series of video games. Based on the original design by Stephen V. Cole and the Amarillo Design Bureau (ADB) for the Star Fleet Battles (SFB) tabletop sci-fi war game. Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
The Hydrans were created for SFB back in the day in order to add more variety to the alien species in the game, and were carried over when SFB was used as the basis for the SFC video games. They are humanoid, with their physiology having both amphibian and mammalian elements but they are also methane breathers, which means they can't exist in the same environment as humans and vice versa. They can normally be found living in the atmosphere of gas giants either on specially built structures or native planetary constructs ("floating continents," et al) that exist within those atmospheres. They have three eyes, three arms and legs (like an Edoan), three genders (male, female, "matriarchal"), and as might be expected almost everything in their culture revolves around everything being in triplicate. They are always at war with their neighbors, the Klingons and Lyrans, who both covet and desire to possess certain parts of the territory that the Hydrans claim as their own. They are an advanced spacefaring species in their own right who discovered time travel technology long before the Federation and the Klingon Empire (although they have studiously avoided its use) and their chief weapon is the hellbore, a fusion cannon type weapon of great power that was slower-firing than photon torpedoes but had the potential to cause greater damage due to the enveloping nature of its detonation upon impact. They were conquered twice in the past by joint Klingon-Lyran expeditions and were at one point subjugated under Klingon rule for about five decades, but the Klingons found them difficult to govern given that they were methane breathers and had to rule from a distance, which gave the Hydrans enough space over time to build up the necessary resources to revolt and successfully expel their Klingon overlords. With regards to the present small Hydran spacecraft designs suitably adapted for the natural environments of other species are one of their more popular exports, given their ruggedness and durability, and elements of their unique starship technologies and weaponry have also been copied and adapted for use by other interstellar powers (with the Hydrans doing so in turn, nudge-nudge).
This was probably the most prolific Hydran Royal Navy starship class of the late TOS/TAS era. They quickly gained a reputation as suicide ships within Hydran ranks during their first decade or so in service, but that reputation was due largely to the overagressiveness of certain Hydran starship commanders trying to accomplish too much with their new ships and not the fault of Hunter itself. It was a sturdy and dependable design that was on a par with contemporary Klingon and Lyran frigate classes and did well enough whenever its commanders didn't attempt too much with it, as was done that first decade or so of its time in service. After that, and once the surviving Hydran frigate captains had settled down, they grew to appreciate Hunter and everything it could do when used right. So too did their superiors, and eventually there were several dozen variations on the basic Hunter custom-tailored for a wide variety of mission profiles -- including the early Cuirassier and later Knight class hellbore-armed versions. The original Hunter remained in front-line Hydran service until replaced early in the TMP era; after which it was relegated to secondary roles and eventually phased out of service not long after era's end. Certain of its variant or spinoff designs would continue in Hydran service into the post-TMP era.
This is semi-canon, as it comes from the SFB gaming continuity.
