Description
Ported to OBJ from the very nice fan-created low poly model included with the Robotech Pack for the Starfleet Command series of video games. Based on the original design by Kazutaka Miyatake. Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
The Gnerl was the stock Zentraedi fighter during the Earth-Zentraedi war as depicted in both the original Macross television series and its Westernized adaption for the multi-part Robotech syndicated series. It was small for a Zentraedi space fighter, being a one-man craft literally built around a cockpit section with a powerful engine fitted with three multi-directional nozzles strapped to the back of it. This combination made it very fast and very agile, although it came with a double price. The first part of that price was it was rather fragile, as it couldn't be heavily armored given its small size without an appreciable loss of both speed and maneuverability. The second was that its small size limited the amount and type of weapons it could carry. It had a single triple-barrelled beam gun in its nose which drew its power directly from its engine, with each barrel used for a different strength (and range) of beam setting. Alternatively two and even all three beam gun barrels could be fired at once, although this was a heavy drain on available power and beam range was correspondingly lessened. It also had three two-tube missile launchers fitted into hull fairings between its cockpit section and the housing for its three thruster nozzles, although missile magazine capacity was limited because of the Gnerl's small size. To partially offset this the Zentraedi would typically fit their Gnerls with small short range missiles (sometimes even simple unguided rockets) having as powerful a warhead as possible for dogfighting purposes, and that way they could increase the number of missiles carried on board given the Gnerl's limited on-board missile storage magazines. Larger missile types were saved for specialized missions, such as assaulting enemy installations or vessels at long range. While many Gnerls were destroyed during the Earth-Zentraedi War, a number would survive and their ultimate fate depends on which continuity you go with, either Macross or Robotech.
This is a straight port with no changes by me. It's not the most sopisticated Gnerl 3D model out there, but please bear in mid this was a low poly fan creation for a video game series released back around the turn of the millennium. Yes, there are other, better, and higher poly Gnerl 3D models out there, but you're going to have to track them down and port them yourself if you want one of them.
While I am no longer making my personal OBJ ports of SFC series models available for general download, and while practically all of the old SFC fan sites are long dead, you can find many of their downloads archived at places such as NexusMods and Lone Bullet. Furthermore there are SFC model format plug-ins available for both the old Milkshape 3D model editor and the hoary old GMAX program (the free ancestor to today's rather pricey 3DS Max) that between the two will port 99% of all SFC models ever created. Finally I recommend the Milkshape path over the GMAX path whenever possible, as there's some extra hoops you've got to jump through with the GMAX path in order to export to the standard OBJ 3D model format.
