Description

Ported to OBJ from the fan created low poly model made for the Starfleet Command (SFC) series of video games.  Based on the original design by Stephen V. Cole and the Amarillo Design Bureau for the Star Fleet Battles (SFB) tabletop sci-fi wargame.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

The Hydrans were created for SFB back in the day in order to add more variety to the alien species in the game, and were carried over when SFB was used as the basis for the SFC video games.  They are humanoid, with their physiology having both amphibian and mammalian elements but they are also methane breathers, which means they can't exist in the same environment as humans and vice versa.  They can normally be found living in the atmosphere of gas giants either on specially built structures or native planetary constructs ("floating continents," et al) that exist within those atmospheres.  They have three eyes, three arms and legs (like an Edoan), three genders (male, female, "matriarchal"), and as might be expected almost everything in their culture revolves around everything being in triplicate.  They are always at war with their neighbors, the Klingons and Lyrans, who both covet and desire to possess certain parts of the territory that the Hydrans claim as their own.  They are an advanced spacefaring species in their own right who discovered time travel technology long before the Federation and the Klingon Empire (although they have studiously avoided its use) and their chief weapon is the hellbore, a fusion cannon type weapon of great power that was slower-firing than photon torpedoes but had the potential to cause greater damage due to the enveloping nature of its detonation upon impact.  They were conquered twice in the past by joint Klingon-Lyran expeditions and were at one point subjugated under Klingon rule for about five decades, but the Klingons found them difficult to govern given that they were methane breathers and had to rule from a distance, which gave the Hydrans enough space over time to build up the necessary resources to revolt and successfully expel their Klingon overlords.  With regards to the present small Hydran spacecraft designs suitably adapted for the natural environments of other species are one of their more popular exports, given their ruggedness and durability, and elements of their unique starship technologies and weaponry have also been copied and adapted for use by other interstellar powers (with the Hydrans doing so in turn, nudge-nudge).

The Hydran Monarch was one of the few space battleship types on which work was actually done in the SFB gaming universe.  It was their response to the Klingon B-10 project.  It was more or less a Paladin class dreadnought ramped up another notch, like many of the other space battleship designs worked up or worked on by the other major interstellar powers at various times, and that's why it looks a lot like Paladin.  Length was limited by the largest spacedock that the Hydrans had available for construction but not width, which in turn made Monarch resemble a Paladin with a greater taper from bow command module to its notably wider stern.  The fact that it was wider plus the extra weapons mounts at key locations were the major visual differences between Monarch and Paladin, plus the fact that it had a bigger hangar bay for carrying another half-squadron of Stinger type fighter shuttles for a total of 18.  The best and most authoritative sources to which I currently have access claim that the class ship was actually started, with plans to build at least two more, and work had advanced quite a bit when the Klingons attacked the Hydran dreadnought shipyard and wrecked the still-incomplete (more like very incomplete) Monarch beyond repair while still in her construction dock during an all-out assault on the Hydran capital.  They didn't leave much to salvage, which in turn forced the Hydrans to cancel the Monarch class entirely.  Many authorities dispute this claim, as well as the parallel claim that the Klingons didn't realize they had destroyed a Hydran battleship until after the attack was over and they were able to do a post-attack analysis of the results.  The Klingons of course claim they knew it all along, as well as many other things regarding that particular attack, so the full truth may never be known.  Whatever really happened, one of the few things we know for sure is that the Monarch project was subsequently cancelled in secret and the incomplete and wrecked Monarch broken up in her slip.  The Hydrans would not attempt to build so large a space warship class again until well into the post-TMP era, contenting themselves instead with working on there newer and more powerful TMP-era generation of starship designs across the board (SFC).

This is semi-canon, as it comes from the SFB gaming continuity.
