Description
Ported to OBJ from the CG model created by Kenny Mitchell. Based on the SS Aurora as first created for the original Star Trek telelvision series (TOS) and as seen in the original as-filmed version of TOS "The Way to Eden," as opposed to its later CGI replacement for TOS-R. Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
"Wait, isn't that the Tholian ship from TOS 'The Tholian Web?'"
You've got a good eye there, fellow fan. You see, back in the day, TOS didn't have enough money to make a brand new and unique model to represent the Aurora, so they did the next best thing. They took their existing Tholian patrol cruiser model, turned it around, attached a pair of Klingon battlecruiser "wings" from the AMT model kit, then added a pair of greebled-up Enterprise warp engines from that AMT model kit (one at the end of each "wing"), and then added a few more detail bits before repainting the whole thing. This kind of stuff goes on all the time with sci-fi shows even with today's CG models, as most folks will tell you. Of course classic Trek tech fans had all sorts of fun trying to explain the original Aurora design over the years and there's an excellent set of blueprints out there courtesy of uber-fan Todd Guenther (the Ships of the Star Fleet series) that make this out to be based on an old Vulcan design, of all things (smile). There's also an even older and less accurate set out there by one David Winfrey that covers the original Aurora design too. Needless to say the original Aurora has fallen by the wayside ever since the replacement CG Aurora came along with TOS-R, but I'm glad Mr. Mitchell went to the trouble of making a CG model of the original Aurora design all the same. That way, those of us old-school classic Trek fans who wanted it could have it.
BTW this is very easy to make on your own even if your CG skills are rudimentary at best. All you have to do is build it the same way that the TOS production people did back in the day. XD
ASIDE - This is not to be confused with the TOS freighter Aurora from Tim Vining's excellent CG fan film of the same name. Go look it up if you haven't heard of it. It's well worth the trouble.
