Mr. Starkweather built this model based on fragmentary information about a Soviet Navy design study at producing their own SWATH catarmaran hull light carrier (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull). I remember reading about SWATH and seeing pictures of a single-aircraft small USN SWATH test platform in Popular Mechanics back in the day, and both they and others have since used the SWATH concept with other warship designs. If you've seen the comparable final USN SWATH CVL study from back then then I think you'd agree with me that the Delfin SWATH is typically Soviet, not caring about its looks but rugged and quite functional (chuckle). This never got built, of course, but I thought this would make an intersting addition to the "what-if"category of the Cold War section of my online Virtual Navy gallery.
Deployed air wing would probably have been similar to that of the Kiev class, although smaller in number due to the smaller hull. You're talking Yakolev VTOL fighters for the fixed air wing component and contemporary Kamov ASW helicopters for the rotary air component. Specific aircraft types used will depend on just when you deploy this with your Soviet-style fantasy fleets.
This is being made available here under right of attribution to the original author/creator of a work that was previoiusly released as freeware. Please credit Lazarus Starkweather if you use this in your own efforts. All I did was port it into the common OBJ format for all of you, so you wouldn't have to wrestle with porting it yourself.
