The Soviet Union rocked the naval world when it launched the first of the Kirov class cruisers at the end of 1977.  At 26,000 tons displacement, they were the largest surface combatants built since the World War II era.  They were as large as World War I era battleships and were armed with as many guided missile and secondary gun systems as their oversize hulls could hold, although they were built with only extremely limited modern cruiser-class protection (some naval authorities have called them glass cannons because of this).   Because of this they were also the first post-World War II class of warships to be classified as battlecruisers, given both their capabilities and construction.  They were also the world's first nuclear powered battlecruisers, utilizing the most advanced CONAS (COmbined Nuclear And Steam) propulsion system that the Soviet Navy had at the time.  No Western warship class at the time could match their combination of size, speed, and overwhelming firepower (via its extensive mix of guided missiles), and the only way the Reagan Administration could find to quickly counter them back then was to reactivate and modernize all four World War II era Iowa class battleships for Cold War service.  They were the pride of the Soviet Navy and four had either been built or were fitting out, with a fifth one on order, when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.  Because of this the fourth and what would be the last ship of the class, Pyotir Veiliky (Peter the Great) would not enter service until 1996 (and not be completely finished until 1998), and the fifth was cancelled outright.  Like the Iowas they proved to be very expensive ships to operate, and as of this date (fall 2020) the two oldest are laid up in reserve, the third is undergoing refit and modernization, and only the fourth and final one is still in active service.  To find out more about the Kirov class, you can follow the link below:

This is the fourth dowoadable Kirov class CG model I've come across over the years, and I'd have to say it's probably the best in both detail and keeping the poly count down as much as possible.  Only the more recent SketchUp effort by Lazarus Starkweather comes close in terms of quality.  There's also the one from Naval War: Arctic Circle and an older SketchUp version posted by Leon several years back which aren't slouches either, although the former is lacking in the finer details and the latter is a waterline model only.  This one to me is the best of the lot, which is why it's the one I've added it to my online Virtual Navy.

ASIDE - Just to show you some things about the Kirovs haven't changed, the only one that's still in active service as I write this (fall 2020), Pyotir Veiliky, is the flagship of the Russian Northern Fleet and has been so ever since it entered service in 1996.
