These were built for the British Royal Navy (BRN) to replace the Type 42 destroyers (Sheffield class) that had made world headlines during the Falklands War in the 1980s. They formally entered Royal Navy service starting in 2009. Theirs is primarily an anti-aircraft and anti-ship role, and much ado was made at the time about their new Sea Viper air defense system, said to be more powerful than the older American Aegis system and supposedly making them being five times as more capable than the Type 42s they were intended to replace. Much ado was subsequently made in the British press about HM government cutting the intended number from twelve to eight, and then even further to six, due to severe budget constraints. In an ironic twist they turned out not to be as good as originally advertised, suffering from numerous problems with certain of the weapons and onboard support systems, and it became obvious within a few years that it was going to be necessary to to take each and every one of them out of operation and completely refit them to address their many flaws. Perhaps more than a few members of HM government were foresighted? Anyway, the refitting process started in 2009 and is expected to be completed this year (2021). Oddly enough, current reports have the Royal Navy permanently taking them out of service as early as 2035. Interesting .... I found this earlier today in a pile of stuff I had downloaded from a CFS2 fan site a while back. It's low-end but very nice looking, which made for a quick and easy port. It also didn't have any rights or release issues associated with it other than giving the original creator his due, which I always try to do. It's only drawback is that it has no keel, propulsion machinery, or rudder; however, these are not required for CFS2 ship models due to the way it handles them. I went ahead and ported it so I could use it as a placeholder until I get a higher quality full hull model at some time in the future. Like I said it was an easy port, and I think most of you will be happy to have it until a better model comes along someday.
This is not my model. All I did was port it for you. Please credit Mark Walsh if you use this with any of your own 3D projects. You do not have to credit me for my OBJ port.
