Description

Ported to OBJ from the waterline model created by Alberto Garcia for Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2 (CFS2).  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  No model download.

Juan Carlos I was the biggest ship in the Spanish Navy (Armada Española, or ESP as I tag it) when it entered service in 2005.  It is named after Spain's first monarch after the death of dictator Francisco Franco, who with his ascension in 1975 presided over the creation of a constitutional monarchy in Spain to replace the late Franco's facist government.  Built by Navitana, it is the sole member of its class in Spanish naval service.  It replaced both the Cold War era light carrier Principe de Asturias and two Cold War era LST types purchased from the United States Navy (USN) and adapted for Spanish Navy use, all of which have since been retired and sent to the barn.  It is usually treated as an aircraft carrier in the world press, although it does more than that.  Its multifunction design allows it to act as both light/"gator" carrier and amphibious assault ship.  It can field any type of VTOL/VSTOL naval aircraft up to and including the F-35B Lightning II, and it has a ski ramp fitted to the port forward section of its flight deck to assist with aircraft takeoffs.  It can also field any helicopter in the Spanish Navy's inventory.  It has onboard support facilities for a total of 30 aircraft or helicopters, or any combination both (half of each is normal for typical deployments).  The "D" signifies its docking well at the stern for carrying and deploying small amphibious assault craft, as well as for cargo and stores loading/unloading.  Juan Carlos I was considered so successful that additional units (in somewhat tweaked forms) were license-built by Navitana for both the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and the Turkish Navy.  HMAS Canberra and HMAS Adelaide, the two Austrailan custom versions, entered RAN service in 2014 and 2015 respectively.  The two custom versions for the Turkish Navy, Anadolu and Trakya, are still under construction as I write this (fall 2021).  To find out more about the Spanish Juan Carlos I type amphibious assault ships of the early 21st century, follow the link below:

This is a straight port with no changes by me.

There are two somewhat different versions of this model floating around that differ only in their included texture sets and were released under different names at different times.  This is the older version, which better matches with Mr. Garcia's Patiño model, but the later version with the newer texture set ports just as easily as did this one.

While I am not releasing my OBJ port of this for public download at the request of Mr. Garcia (the original creator), you can download it yourself from one of several different Microsoft Flight Simulator series fan add-on sites and port it for your own personal use ONLY with ModelConverterX.

TRIVIA - The actual Spanish Navy classification for this warship is strategic protection vessel (Sp. buque de proyección estratégica).  Most professional naval experts find it convenient to match it with the USN landing helicopter ship dock (LHD) amphibious assault ship category (as it is very similar), and use the matching three-letter abbreviation for shorthand purposes in classification (see Jane's Fighting Ships, et al).  I have followed their lead.  No offense meant to the Armanda Española or its many fans, hopefully none taken.
