These were the first large warships built by the Soviet Navy (Sovetsky flot) following the eventual victory of the Communists at the end of the Russian Civil War and the formation of the Soviet Union during the early interwar period. They were also the first destroyer flotilla leaders, or just destroyer leader (DDL) in modern naval terminology, that had been built in Russia since the Norvik/Orfrey class of Tsarist times. They were ordered in two batches of three each for a total of six, with the first batch designated as Project 1 and the later second batch designated as Project 38 in Soviet naval records at the time. Their design was inspired by the French Navy's oversized contre-torpilleurs and they were intended from the onset to be destroyer flotilla leaders. Given the fact that the only warships of any size that the Soviets themselves had built before these being the problem-plagued Uragan class guardships, their construction ended up being just as much of a mess and the actual ships themselves suffering from kinds of problems and issues much like the far smaller Uragan. Fortunately the Soviets had learned enough from Uragan by then not to make the Leningrads top-heavy, but that was about it insofar initial construction went. Wikipiedia notes that the six ships of the Leningrad took an "absurdly long" time to build, with a number of those delays caused by shipyard mismanagement. Leningrad, the class ship, began building in 1932 but would not complete her final fitting-out and be commissioned into Soviet naval service until 1936. Tbilisi, the last ship in the class, took the longest to build (five years). All six were very active in supporting Soviet naval and ground operations during World War, with only one lost during that conflict. Moskva was lost on 26 June 1941, most likely to Romanian mines. Minsk was also sunk during the war, having fallen prey to German dive bombers in Kronsdadt harbor on 23 September 1941. She was successfully refloated the following year and was repaired sufficiently for her to steam under her own power to a proper shipyard for further repairs, although they were not completed and she did not return to service until 1944 due to the needs of the war. The five surviving Leningrads continued to serve with the Soviet Navy through the first decade of the Cold War, mostly in reduced capacities due to their age and worn condition, until they were either scrapped or sunk as target ships from 1958 to 1964. While I am no longer making my OBJ ports of Silent Hunter series models available for public download, you can get this yourself in one of two ways. You can extract it piecemeal from the game data using the free SKWAS/s3ditor model utility and rebuild it in your preferred 3D modeling software, or you can rip it directly from the game after installing any necessary mods or mod packs noted above using any good 3D model ripper (3D Ripper DX or NinjaRipper recommended).

ASIDE - Leningrad is a premium Tier VII destroyer in the Russian tech tree in World of Warships by Lesta Studios. She was one of the first premium Soviet destroyers to be offered for the game, with at least one well-written fan review comparing her in-game performance favorably with the Polish Blyskawica (Grom class).
