Leona Heidern from King of FightersLeona was another one of the military characters from KOF. So once again I wanted to get rid of the military suit and try something authentic for her.
I decided to go more towards hi-tech spy rather than straight military, maybe like a spec ops sneaking suit. Along with that she has a new tech sword, and a silenced pistol.
I also wanted to do something cool with her hair. She is always depicted with really long hair so at first I wanted to give her dreadlocks, but was thinking that it didn't really go along with the rest of the outfit. So I decided to refine the dreadlocks idea with something more unique and instead turned them into 3 long braided pony tail's wrapped in camouflage that she would whip around almost like a weapon in the middle of a fight.

Hmm...I like it.Β It gives me a more Metal Gear feel (I see a comment saying it looks like one of the characters.Β I don't play it anymore but it still reminds me of the series).Β I'm a big fan of this design all the way.Β I know she isn't supposed to be designed this way as far as her actual character but I'm not a fan of her bust being so big.Β The way she moves around, I don't see how that is an asset.Β I'd have her wear a wrap of some kind so the giggle physics engine would be limited being that she's ninja-esque.Β

To be honest, this is the only design that I hate. Not only katana and armor are not suitabke at all for a character like this, but the hair looks just stupid. I liked all of the other ones, even if some bugged me a little. Oh well.

Leona would fit right in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance along with the rest of the cyborgs and mercenaries. She and Raiden can duke it duke it out in a friendly battle to see who is the better solider Riot of Blood vs Jack The Ripper.

Your redux series is in general very well-made, but this picture epitomizes what I don't like with it : the females are all turned into half-naked Croftesque bimbos for no good reason, regardless of their character. Although well-drawn, this is not what Leona is about, and this piece is definitely the worst of all.

Nice work. What techniques do you use for colouring?

It's all photoshop. Varying techniques on how I get the different FX. LOTS of layers lol. Most of my pics usually end up being 50-100 layers deep
- Start with flat colors.
- duplicate all the flats can color them 50-70% darker for shadows.
- mask out all the highlighted areas.
- Add in small FX and details like glows and haze.
- Color the actual lines.
- Adjust color and saturation levels.
Right now I am trying to get a more painterly look out of the preset photoshop brushes. I really want the brush work to look more organic but I have tried using painter and I am just not to comfortable with it. So I gotta build my own techniques in PS

Thanks alot for the insight. Wow, that's a lot of layers. It's always good to gain knowledge on the varying techniques other artists use. There's so many.
I wasn't sure about painter when I started using it either. But it just takes some getting used to so don't give up on it. Try using 'Artists Oils>Wet oily brush' and the 'Wet Oily Palett knife' for blending.

If you were to make Iori then "OMG PLEAZ DO!" Nah... I don't want to be pushy here. But Iori with a new look would be nice, since he's always been with his hairstyle and that black uniform with the crescent moon on the back, making him the most unchanged character as the series progress. LOL!

i knew Leona was very military like and doesn't have emotions only with the orrichi form but i guess thats a different story.
despite you being in the US maybe you can come to japan to work with Falcoon both of you could make a great team.
