Description Character Concept Art for a video game design called Book of Shadows. These are the mentors that help the player as well as teach him or her spellcasting. The player's character is chosen among The Coven . What remained unselected became sub-bosses during the player's story/adventure.

For awhile there was some promise this game may be made, but it wasn't to be. So I thought I'd share, as I've always liked the Frank Milleresk (is this a word?) style I used when I created these. This was done because it fit the dark-diggity-darkness mood of the design, and the images had to be black & white as they were to be put in a design document that had to be reprinted (cheaply) many many times. Anyway, who knows what the future may bring, the game may still get a chance after all!

For those curious:
Book of Shadows: Before being plucked from the night streets, you knew nothing of enchantments, charms, and hexes, but all that will change. Your eyes and mind will open to a world with no boundaries and wondrous possibilities, but first you must be freed from the clutches and schemes of a spell-wielding megalomaniac. Lucky for you, help comes in the form of an elderly Vodou Bòkò and his talking cat.

Book of Shadows is a third person 3D fast-action open-ended gaming experience in a world of guns and urban violence, however the most destructive weapon you will have available to you a unique real-time magick system that uses use a number of vocal chants and physical gestures to shape this force in various combinations to form hundreds of spell effects.

You will discover there is virtually nothing you cannot do, and your command of these abilities will be tested against demonic creatures, witch hunters, and other spellcasters of different world mythoi who seek your demise.

"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law."
- Aleister Crowley, Liber AL vel Legis.

Here from the Champions forums after your post in the Crosses thread.. Nice concept! Interesting how there's different cultures being represented, each one effectively with their own take on magic.. I'd love to see this made into a game one day. Not entirely sure what kind of game though... RPG seems an obvious choice, with there being effectively different schools of magic to level up... But with guns in there as well.... I keep thinking using the Oblivion or Skyrim engines (not sure what they're actually called, but those're the games I'm thinking of), to have an FPS which also permits magic would be interesting... I'd love to see that system in a modern setting that's not as alien as the Elder Scrolls seems to me. And it could work well with this concept. So RPFPS? I guess?

It was a sandbox RP3PS kinda like the Rockstar Games with a fast action spell system that was very very versitile. You really could do what though wilt as the Crowley quote says! I remember sitting with Erick Wujcik (creator of the Amber Diceless System) a couple of months before he was diagnosed with Cancer. He had gone through everything we had done for this game, and was quite impressed and remarked that he could easily take what we did and write a new PnP system with it. Sadly, it wasn't to be.
